Bike was running smoothly on a ride to my friends and then we all parked up in a local car park. I rolled the bike forward in neutral and it was like it was still in gear and then suddenly the pressure came off and it sounded like something pinged off or broke, when starting to ride it the back wheel felt like it was wobbling like made so immediately rode it home to find out the nut was lose and one of them was boiling and smoking!

I tightened it up as much as I could with a ratchet and spark plug socket which is the right size and started to ride it again and it was fine for about half a mile and then it started to do it again so I came straight home. when I grab the back wheel hard and move it side to side there seems to be a bit of freeplay in it now and it cannot be tightened anymore, any idea what the hell has happened?

Yep they are knackered all right. I am not familar with your model but would suggest that you check if your model has a bearing spacer which resembles a bit of tube inserted in the rear wheel as they have been known to seize in the axle and cause the bearings to collapse, just a thought and worth checking.

Good news is that I have two spare wheels with bearings intact however they are grey so would rather change over the bearings if possible however I can't see how the hell you go about removing them!

Bearings are really single use items since removal usually involves the 'Tapping Stick' and a punch/drift.

I'm sure you can live with a slightly oddball colour scheme until you can get those fried bearings changed?

Matt.

Yep, replace with high quality japanese items, once you have the bearings removed look for a number on the bearings and phone around for the best deal, if there is a tube spacer between the bearings then they will generally come out into the wheel hub, if not they can generally be removed from the outside. Look for retaining circlips around the outer edges of the bearings as this will indicate the direction of removal and replacement. before installing your new bearing place them in the freezer for an hour as this will help their installation.

Cheers Matt suppose I'm going to have to until I've got the zxr 400 mot'd and paid my fine from today. Time to try and find a way to bodge lifting it now since I don't have paddock stands, Chris suggest a paint can to prop up the rear but I have a feeling I'm going to struggle with the front

Could you try suspending your bike via its handlebars from a good wooden roof beam or similar with a rope, I do this from time to time from a beam in my garage if I am stuck.

Flat ceiling with no bars at all....might just have to swap the rear one for now and see if its okay temporarily. Will be selling it next month so long as it last a month or two I'll be alright I suppose.
