Hi guys,

Got a friend who is looking for a bike at the moment, he has found a TZR125 on ebay, its quite high mileage but generaly it looks to be in alright condition.

The only thing that jumps out in the ebay description is that the powervalve is permenently open, will this effect the way the bike rides much? Also how easy is it to sort it out so it works properly?

Can you see anything that jumps out as dodgy in the add (apart from the paint job Laughing)

Thanks

There will probably be nothing at the bottom end of the rev range but it will be producing more than the 12 bhp allowed at the time for learners.
As a new bike they came without the servo motor to power the valve and the powervalve was closed, this is how they were restricted for the UK market.
End of the day its a 19 year old learner two stroke, that'll have been thrashed & abused by 17 year olds.
They were a good bike in there time & parts are relatively cheap.
I personally would factor in the cost an engine rebuild then if it does need one it will come as no surprise

I figured it would probably need a rebuild, I don't mind helping him out if it does as long as its just the top end.

I had one of them a while back. The powervalve can just be opened with a spanner as I recall but unless you have the servo then obviously you can only set it in one position and have it stay there (I presume that's what the advertiser means rather than that it's actually seized but you should check).

With it open full the bike was a lot quicker top end (maybe 20bhp and 95 on the speedo rather than 12 bhp and 75). There was so little low down power though that it was a pain in the arse to ride so I quickly shut it again as it was much more usable. With the servo and the best of both worlds I imagine it'd be pretty good but I found passing my test and buying a proper bike a better solution Laughing
