Whilst there's probably a core element of truth in it, i don't think it's especially well demonstrated.
The first test he gives a 1-2-3 countdown before pulling on the arm, after the tap on the head, he gives no such count down.
In the 2nd 'protected' test, the subject is more aware of what's coming as he was 'caught out' in the 1st test.

As for the boxing comment - after a hard concussive blow to the head, a boxer's legs go out because the brain is too shaken up to maintain balance and/or limb control, not because the brain is trying to protect itself by withdrawing motor control - it simply is not capable of 'normal' function.

That's my thoughts, i wait to be contradicted by the BCF boffins....
