''Safety cameras'' that are supposedly all about ''safety'' and ''safe driving/riding'' are being switched off in Oxfordshire because it is no longer financially viable to operate them.
It would seem that it was all about the money after all.

Sorry kids but I have been overseas for a couple of weeks and didn't realise that this was an old story that had already been covered. Oxfordshire's speed camera policies aren't front page news in California.
The cash cow terminology is however justified. Many County Councils were paid huge swathes of money to install and maintain these cameras by the previous government. Since the new coalition took over and realised how skint the country is this funding for the County Councils has stopped. Seeing as there's no longer any money in it for them the County Councils are now putting ''safety matters'' onto a back burner.

You can still use it, it's not like they'll be taking the cameras down yet. Better still, pop over the border to Northamptonshire, there's still plenty working here.

If you read the original article, the reason they are cutting them is that the council is cutting the funding to the safety group who run them.......
So because they are losing 600K, they can't afford to keep them running....

Some cash cow that is Laughing

I think a lot of the cash cow figures were from people ( anti camera groups ) taking the stats and presenting them in the way they wanted them to appear. If these were really making the council so much money. Do you think the council would be looking to cut the funding, knowing for well that they would be losing a massive income....
They may be stupid, but not that stupid.... Rolling Eyes

Not really. The camera groups made shed loads from them when they could just claim back all the proceeds from them. It was a pyramid financing scheme, but that changed a few years ago (hence new cameras stopped being put up, and mobile vans reduced in use), and now have been changed again.

All the best

Keith
