I changed the clutch on my bike today, but didn't check how tight I the springs were bolted down before taking it apart. On reassembly I screwed them all the way down to the towers, so the bolts are almost fully compressed in use.

Is this right? It was making some nasty chain-slappy noises coasting in first with the clutch pulled in, although this seems to have settled down. I also need to have the clutch cable at the limit of its adjustment at each end to get any tension, although I was just fitting a good used clutch instead of new plates.

I don't think you are supposed to tighten them down as far as they will go, I think it's something piddly like 12ft/lb. I sheared the head off a pressure plate bolt once, it had barely even started to tighten and it just came off in the socket, been paranoid about overtightening them ever since. My Blade ones I didn't do very tight at all, 3.5years and it's been fine.

Torque to correct settings stated in the manual.

No precise torque settings given.
Can't remember if they are 8mm bolts or 10mm. But the standard torque settings for 8mm (no flange) are 13-18 lbf and the 10mm 22-29 lbf.

2.3mm is the service limit for the clutch plates.

Ah ha, found it in my dodgy scan of the original Honda workshop manual - as Pat said, the Haynes didn't list a torque value.

Should be 6-9 ft-lb. There was so little resistance when tightening the bolts that 6ft-lb may still bring them down to the towers, but I'll strip it and see.

Thinking Mine will need loosening. Surprised

RE: The chain slapping. Could this be down to the anti judder spring not seated properly?

Sorted it. 6 ft-lb was still a bit tight, but I took it to 6 ft-lb then back off 180 degrees.

Only problem now is it cutting out when it gets hot (and then getting really hot), but I'm putting this down to a lack of valve clearance. Last time I rebuilt the engine I didn't check the valves, and used a thinner smear of instant gasket on the rocker cover than last time. Will set those one of these mornings before I go to work.
