Hi guys.

I thought that for a change of hearing of some of you being ripped off, I'd give some positive feedback of a bike shop.

I was on the hunt for a helmet today and I was going round three or four of the main bike shops to have a look at their stock and to get an idea of what sort of helmets fit.

Anyway, the guys at Hein Gericke Glasgow spent a decent amount of time with me letting me try on lots of helmets to give me an idea of what was going to fit right. I was mainly interested in the AGV stealth but medium was too tight (painful) and Large was too loose. The salesman even said that he wouldn't be happy selling me that helmet.

Hein Gericke is a bit more pricey than the likes of J&S, but the people that work there are worth their weight in gold, especially when it comes to helmets.

I guess the point of this thread is to emphasise the importance of fit on a helmet before buying, and not only that but emphasising the importance of buying from a shop.

I understand some people go in and try on helmets and then order from the internet, but from the service I recieved I know where my cash is going.

A quick question, how seriously do you all take sharp ratings? I almost bought a 1 star helmet out of J&S without knowing the sharp rating. I dodged that bullet... I think...

You shouldnt pick a helmet by its sharp rating, pick it by how well it fits.

A 1 star helmet that fits your head snug as a bug will definately protect you more then a 5 star helmet that doesnt fit and has a few gaps.

Obviously if its gunna stick in your mind, i wouldnt buy the 1 star, because you'll always have that doubt in your mind. But just dont look it up Razz always buy it by fit. Same arguement with the £50 vs £500 helmet, they're as good as each other, only if it fits.

I've bought two helmets from Folwers in Bristol, both times the folks hav been very helpfull in getting the best one - budget too. Hein Gericke in Bris seems good too but I've not bought anything over £20 there yet.

Ive bought a few things at that shop, there is a little blonde hair guy that talks and talks and is a too pushy a salesman but the rest seem ok.

J&S i had to wait ages beside the ultra fat salesman trying to chat up a woman that he had no chance with, i waited with about 1k worth of stuff and was about to leave when the other salesman spotted me. Don't get me wrong J&S were good when i had to return stuff.

Surely buy one that fits AND has a good rating?

I was a bad lad and tried on my helmet in a nearby shop before ordering it on the net (at about a 10% saving) but in my defence I HAVE bought a certain number of things in there since, some of it with the money I saved Very Happy. Maybe not the same value but I bet they got almost as much markup. Unfortunately their comprehensive but wierdly limited range (translation: they have everything under the sun except what I want or need most days) has put a bit of a choker on that. Perhaps if they're now selling it at a competitive price (they have their own online store, so I'm puzzled as to why not) I'll make my replacement a walk in.

However I can't make much complaint about any of the ones in my area (west and northeast birmingham, i'm sure you can figure them out), except for the very nearest Honda dealer whose non-bike sales guy was arsey. They've now shut up shop so maybe other local riders thought the same? Haven't been in the brum HG, but I only just found out where it was...
