Often it's 'timed' by the points gap, @TDC.
spark happens when the points start to open. That breaks the circuit 'energising' the coil, causing the electromagnetic field in the primary windings to colapse.
Spark is generated by the coils of the secondary winding in the coil, 'reacting' to the colapse of the field in the primary winding, and creating a huge reverse voltage.
That change is initiated moment the points start opening, BUT we measure the points gap, when they are fully upen.
Ie some degrees of crank rotation AFTER the points started opening, trigering in the spark.
So, if there's NO other markings or guides, default is:-
- Rotate crank to TDC.
- Rotate back plate to get the points follower on the peak of the cam, at TDC.
- Adjust the contact gap to specified setting
- Then nip everything up.
Sparks will fire as points open, which will be at a few degrees in advance of TDC, and gives you your 'base' setting for fine tuning, dialing in more or less advance to suit your fuel and pre-mix etc. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!
