The other day I went walking in the Lakes and rode there/back.

I used my large top-box and just managed to squeeze in my helmet, leather jacket, textile trousers, back protector and gloves when I got there (I did try it out before setting off)

As I couldn't squeeze anything else into the top box, I wore the same boots for walking & riding. Not ideal, as they rubbed quite badly.

I was obviously quite limited as to what I could stash, so, other than fit full, hard panniers what do other people do in this situation?

Although I'd never do it in town, I suppose that I could have put my helmet in a bag and locked it to my bike/U-lock with a cable.
I had also thought about lashing a big plastic toolbox for my gloves etc. to the pillion seat and locking that to the bike.

You can always drill 3 holes in your seat and BOLT a box onto your seat so it can't be simply lifted away. I have 2 seats for my CBR one has holes in it one does not, when I need to carry a lot of stuff securely I bolt a top box onto the seat, the top box mounting frame turned to powder after a couple winters. Just buy another top box and or anoher seat if you care, you can always bung the holes in the seat if you don't need to use it.

Jacket, helmet and trousers are all easily locked to the bike, get a chain or cable lock and thread it through a sleeve, trouser leg and through your lid.

Then the silly-shaped stuff like boots can go in the topbox.

Good idea. I could work on something similar.

Excellent. I'd not thought of doing that with the jacket and trousers.

Problem with doing that is if it rains you are screwed, quite likely in the Lake District. You can always put stuff in a duffle bag of somekind, you can get those waterproof ones for kayaking, then there is a lockable metal mesh like fishnet you can get to cover stuff, it's not really going to stop anyone nicking it but it's a deterrent. You would hope the sort of people who have paid to park in a national park carpark would not likely ransack your bike luggage.

This is mine in Amsterdam, just below the bike; seemed to do the job ok, though some decent bolt croppers would get through it (as with most things).
