As the title suggest really,

I currently do not own a bike. I'm looking at getting a CBT then a 125 to get me on the road, riding that for a year or so then doing Theory + Mod 1 + Mod 2.

I'm 18 years old and really have no interest in getting a car licence at this point in my life. For many reasons varying from the sky-high cost of insurance, to just having no interest in cars.

My concern stems from the mention of these new tests and regulations being brought into effect 'SOON'? Neutral

Will this kick me in the goolies as far as getting my bike licence is concerned or am I okay for a couple of years yet? Some people said it's coming into effect in January (in which case I'm buggered!) and others have said 5 years time..?

Just looking for some clarification really guys as I'm unable to find anything set in stone on the internet.

Thanks in advance,

Steve.

Two things that hold true for the bike test :-

1. It won't be getting easier.
2. It won't be getting cheaper.

Same for the car test; you may not have an interest in cars right now, but sooner or later you may need one once you've started breeding, or that perfect job appears which has a car licence as a requirement.

It's really a case of the earliest you can afford to do it, do it.

When I did my CBT a few weeks back I was told new regulations come in in 2013.

Thanks for the replies peeps.

2013? That's a bit better I suppose.

Gives me enough time as I'm not financially able to sit either tests at the minute Sad (car or bike)

Yes Shaggy I agree completely, and I have told myself that as soon as I have my bike licence, I am going to get my car entitlement and not actually own a car until I find myself in a position where I need to. Simply because this is quite a handy thing to have and it's something I'm not going to regret spending money on.

You'll never regret taking your test, car or bike, as even if you don't own either vehicle straight away you will know you can always pick it up when you can afford one, and take refresher lessons if you need to when the time comes.

Do whatever you can afford as soon as you can afford to do it!

I've already posted up about this Thumbs Up

It's coming into place in october, they're adding a new bit to the road riding bit.

It's the same for the car test though, they are adding a 10 minute section where you are told to go somewhere, or shown a card with a diagram, and are told to follow the road and signs to this certain place, without any input from the examiner.

they ain't extending the test, it'll just be a part of it.

The 2013 thing is about extending the age for DAS to 24, rather than 21.
If you pass your test before then though, it won't cause any problems.

You'll get lessons about the new part of the test, it's nothing to worry about - it's not as hard as you'd think.

Cheers

Dunc

Motorcyclists – The current two categories of motorbike will be replaced with three – A1 (up to 125cc), A2 (up to 35Kw) and A (above 35Kw) - and new rules introduced for riders of larger bikes. Riders wanting to progress to larger categories of motorbikes will have to take a further test and there will be a rise in the minimum age from 21 to 24 for those wishing to start riding larger bikes without previous experience.

So A2 doesn't mean a restriction for 2 years anymore then Thinking

35kW seems reasonable.

it applies in the same way as before, you cannot ride a bike with a power output exceeding 46.2 bhp, and it cannot produce more than 92.4bhp un modified i believe. so basically double its restricted power if that makes sense?

Now I'm even more confused Laughing

So to sum it up?:

-In october there'll be a slight modification to Module 2.

and

-In 2013 the age of DAS goes from 21 to 24.

So basically, as I'm 18, if I get my test done, I'll have to do the slight extension to module 2, but as I'm not going for DAS, I will have no further problems?

This is confusing the living bejeesus out of me... I was told this by my training company.

Because I'm planning on doing (and finally passing!) my Mod 2 in August, will this mean that when my two year restriction is up i'll have to take another test or can I just jump on a big bike? Or if I don't pass my test until say, mid 2011(hell forbid) would I have to take another test in 2013?

Anyone else think that the DSA, DVLA, Dft, etc etc etc etc are a tad wishy-washy in their explanation of this sort of stuff? Can they not just say it in plain words of one syllable english that we all know and love?

it is all explained here.

https://www.bmf.co.uk/upload/documents/1196679553_3rd_european_directive.pdf

you wont be affected if you take your test before they change this. im guessing you will just continue until your restriction is up and thats that.

hope this helps everyone

Great way to milk young riders.

If a 17yo want to ride any bike as soon as possible, he will need to pay for A1 test first.. pass it.. then wait 2 years until he will be allowed to do A2 test.. pass it.. then he will have to wait another 2 years to be allowed to do Full A test.

Or he can wait until he's 24yo to be allowed to do Full A test straight away.

I feel sorry for them already.

If I had to pass 3 tests before I could ride any size/bhp bike I would probably ride (illegaly) on 125cc 2T full power on CBT until my 24th Birthday.

If you ain't, I'ma gonna be in the same boat as you and kinda feckered as well, so you're not on your own!

Thanks for the clarification guys,

I'll be in the same boat too!!! Laughing

So, to clear everything up once and for all,

providing we pass full tests before 2013, we'll be alright?

But then to be honest, I really do feel sorry for everybody wanting to do tests after this date, the time frame between each test and full entitlement to bikes is bloody ridiculous Shocked

But for us, I think we're blowing it slightly out of proportion as we won't seriously be affected.

It's the kids who want to ride bikes in a few years time who are gonna be well and truly boned.

BRAINFART: Just occured to me - are we going to end up with EVEN MORE mopeds on the road for this reason?

Dare I mention: The complete and utter piss take of all of this is that you can go and get in a Bugatti Veyron with a provisional license. The point that the insurance would be unaffordable for us mere mortals and they're hard to come by notwithstanding...
