Number plate sales advice please

I just received this mail from a mate and fellow Ariel enthusiast in the USA. I have not got a clue but I do doubt selling a number would not be that easy any advice please.

There are companies that will give you a valuation, buy the plate or sell it on your behalf. The price wouldnt be as good as top private but it would be easier. Have a look on google for some plate dealers!

It's unlikely to be worth £1500 because the plate doesn't really spell out anyone's initials, unless your name begins with a V. It's probably worth about half that. You need to make sure the V5 registration document doesn't say "Reg mark non-transferable", a lot of older vehicles have that on the logbook which means the plate has to stay with it.

It's a bit of hassle getting the plate off. The buyer needs to register the bike to themselves, and pay £105 to DVLA to retain the plate. Then nominate a new owner on the retention certificate when that appears.

But all that said and done, it's still a decent plate that someone would like, to hide the age of their vehicle.

VBM 673 is listed on newreg.co.uk for £1,545 so I think it is likely to command the same sort of price. Of course, with number plates, it's really a case of what will somebody actually pay for it.

I believe it is an Irish plate so don't think it would need to remain with the vehicle but the DVLA would be able to help. The plate may need transferring straight onto a vehicle as some Irish plates can't be held on certificate.

If your friend is serious about this, call the DVLA on 0300 790 6802 and they will be able to tell you more.

Not an Irish registration. While NI used number plates with 3 letters followed by 1 to 4 numbers, one of the 2nd or 3rd letters would be an I or a Z.

From here it was a Bedfordshire registration from 1958.

Thanks people, much as I thought, an over inflated price by a pikey of a plate dealer. If John were to buy the bike and export her he would still have the rights to the number and could sell it eventually for a far lower price on Ebay. I know these dealers buy the rights to sell many thousands of plates but of course they commit no money until a sale goes through and this could take many years.

I can't see why an overseas owner of the plate being held on retention wouldn't be possible, or you or a UK friend holding it for him Very Happy
