R.I.P. replacement USB Hard Drive

Right, seems by hard drive has died. I'm in Thailand, and I only copied my movies over to my computer.

This makes me sad.

It's one of those ones with two USB cables, one for datastream, one for power. Plug in either and the hard drive starts spinning, but the green indicator light doesn't come on, and the computer stubbornly ignores it.

Quite possible it got wet or knocked.

Left it alone drying out overnight, and will continue doing so, but it might need more drastic action. There are computer shops here, one might be able to fettle it back to life, but anything I can try before hand? Anything I should under no circumstances try (vigorously rubbing it with strong magnets to get out filings for instance )

I may be that its just the caddy electronics that are duff.

I had a similar problem with a desktop external caddy - disc was fine, the caddy was at fault.

Take the disc out of the caddy and try it in another one.

Ah, excellent. Like I say, the drive still spins, so that gives me hope

Stupid stupid hope. But hope none the less.

Cannot do myself, joy of thailand. But it will cost about 20p to get someone else to do it.

A drive that spins is usually a good sign - unless its accompanied by a regular ticking noise

Its caused by the drive failing to read the data but continually retrying. Known as the "click of death"
