I took my RXS for it's mot the other day. It passed Dance!. On the way there I gave it some stick down a dual carriageway and two problems arose. The first problem I noticed was when I got it into fourth the clutch started slipping, the revs rose really quickly with not much forward motion and I was struggling to see much over 50. It was ok before when I had tested it Confused. Could this just be adjustment(if so how do I adjust it) or is a new set of plates in order, it's only got 17k on it. Secondly I had a quick peek over my shoulder and I could not see shit for the smoke, it was epic. The bike was running fine so I carried on. On the way back it didn't smoke at all, yet I started it this morning and it's smoking again. Any ideas? Also it's developed a top end rattle. When I bought the bike about two months ago it had been siezed up by some retard of an owner. This was on a rebore so it's the second time it's been siezed up. God knows what the oil they ran it on was. It was orange and smelt funny, Pretty sure it was'nt two stroke. I've since fitted a new piston and small end bearing and it's been fine, although over a period of time a quiet but noticeable rattle has developed. It runs ok and it has'nt siezed up yet so it must be getting enough oil, Plus it smokes like fook so it's definetly getting enough oil. It's got a pattern piston and small end in it, could this be something to do with it.
Sorry for the essay.

Ollie

There's a relatively little known issue with some RXS clutches. The ones that use a thick washer behind the clutch basket are prone to slipping. Using one of the thinner washers fitted to earlier (and later) motors solves it (well, it did for me and someone else I know with a similar problem).

God alone knows how anyone manages to seize an RXS. I once ran my original motor dry and it still didn't lock up (though it did make a noise like fifty people sanding wood simultaneously...but was OK once it had oil again). My current motor has now passed the 100,000 miles mark and is still on all original major components.

Top end rattle is nothing to worry about. I've had one for the past 60K miles and it's not got much worse lol. It tends to come and go a bit these days. I've never had a small end go - it's always piston slap.

A nice blue haze is what you want to see. That'll sometimes increase to a following cloud, depending on the weather conditions, how warm the engine is and the level of wear in the bore. Also, some oil pumps seem to let more oil through the others, even when adjusted the same. An RXS motor should do 4-500 miles to a litre of 2T. Much more than that and it's not getting enough oil. Much less and something is wrong somewhere.

I find it's a good idea not to worry. All the time it's running along OK, keep riding it.

Cheers Vince. I adjusted it up till it had about 2mm of play before it pulled the cable and that is literally right and the end of the adjustment, and it didn't make any difference, it's still slipping. I've got a manual but it's worse than rubbish.

Good to hear. Hopefully it wont get any worse.

This is what It's usually like but it tends to have random outburts for no reason.

Coming back from Canterbury the other day, it was almost like being on my old H1 again - I looked in the mirror to see a massive cloud of blue smoke spewing from the old girl. But she continued to run fine and a while later it subsided. I think a lot of the time unburnt oil builds up in the exhaust during stop-start slow riding, then burns away once you can give it some stick again.

It sat in a garage for 2 years before I bought it so It's probably just clearing itself out tbh.
