Are ground anchors like bike locks, vary so much from one to another.

What are the better ones that people have used for its use, ease of install and quality in relation to insurace approval.

You went and bought one? Brick Wall I hope I'm wrong mate but enjoy it whilst it lasts before someone half inches it.

As for ground anchors, get the Almax package for about £250. Almax IV, squire lock, tail pack and ground anchor. Job done. You spend £7k on a new bike, don't scrimp on security. https://www.almax-security-chains.co.uk/bevltv170584/Almax-Immobiliser-Series-IV/c-1-70/

I don't have a ground anchor since my garage is quite difficult to get into but if I did need one I'd make it from 50mm rebar bent in a U-shape and sunk into concrete.

To be honest, why would anyone bother defeating a ground-anchor when there's a chain to be cut?

I made one by welding an enormous D shackle shut and sinking it into some concrete in the ground with two big bits of rebar. Almax Series III through that.

This is what makes me laugh with ground anchors.

They charge extortionate amounts for something you could go to a local engineering firm and have made for a tenner.

Busted!

The funny thing is that in a year of parking my bikes in Central London with no secutiry, no problems. The day I use my mountain bike and lock this up, it gets knicked?

This is why I asked? Surly the weak point will still be the chain and therefore no matter how big the anchor or how secure it is will not change this.

I dont 'need' an anchor but was looking at something a little better in the intrim whilst I sort out a more permanent home for the bike in the back garden and was musing about a secure mounting point.

But if you don't have an anchor, they can just hoick it in a van with no effort.

I have a ground anchor but I've never bothered fitting it. It's an Oxford BruteForce, it feels heavy and reliable. There about £18 - £20 on the internet. I got mine for £14 and I don't see the point in spending rediculous amounts of money on them. If they want your bike they are going to nick it one way or another.

The point of ground anchors is that although they still have the same weak point in the chain you use, they force people to have to break into it there and then, rather than picking it up to put it into a van and break into later. An Ideal ground anchor would be one you could put your back wheel into and then lock the bike into place with it. No way to pick the bike up and the lock can be stupidly strong as you don't have to carry it about.

But they could remove the rear wheel and use a skateboard.

I've seen a new SV650 parked up near by in a very obvious location with a huge chain through a ground anchor and the back wheel. You could buy a new wheel off ebay for £50 and swap them over in about 10 minutes!
