Currently a novice that hires bikes for track days. After putting the last one in the gravel, I've decided to purchase my own. These are my requirements:

1. Budget ~1.5k
2. Must be around ~100BHP
3. Ideally 600 - 750cc
4. Cheap parts

I've been looking at the GSXR600 K1 which seems to tick the boxes. Are there any other bikes that tick the boxes?

Older CBR 600's. I sold my '92 for £640, the 99's at the time were going for around £1100 ish.

K1 would be good for the cash. One of the more track focused 600's of that era. R6's are good but early ones suffered from 2nd gear issues.

Be extra careful when looking at a track bike, theres plenty of tat thats been abused, bodged, crashed then bodged again. Also try to get one with WOW's (Wets on wheels)

I may look at a road bike with a view to converting it to a track bike.

That is a really expensive way of going about business, why would you want to get a road bike and convert?? Thinking

+1. That is by far the most expensive way of doing it. Buy a bike ready converted.

you got scammed Sad they're worth more than that.. the 99s (FX/Y alloy framed models) are worth around £2k+ for a roadbike. overpriced imo compared to the £1100-1600 of the previous steelies but thats just what they are.

if you're selling any other bikes tho let me know Wink

but on topic.. i agree!

an old CBR600F steelie makes a great starter trackbike, tis exactly what i've got.

handlings good, parts are cheap and it's got plenty of poke. pretty tough too if you do end up slinging it down the track. which is how i ended up doing it in the first place, twas my road bike originally but i crashed at cadwell park over a year ago, rebuilt it over the winter and its served me brilliantly as my trackbike this year, other than a crack in my downpipes that i've now replaced shes been faultless all year

there are plenty available on ebay for peanuts that come with spares, wets, stands, etc..

No I didn't, it went for £60 less that what I bought it for.

Go look through completed ebay listings for "CBR track bike".

just had a quick look and cant see any CBR600F trackbikes for under a grand. well.. grand and up.

note i was talking roadbike which i presumed you were as well, granted a track based FX/FY will be cheaper but even the steelies i dont think i've seen one for as cheap as you parted with yours for.

probably works out similar tho as most of these bikes come with wets, stands, etc.. shame those things dont really increase the price much

definately there are some nice deals around to be had tho Smile

No they're not, I bought, and sold my 2000 CBR600FY for £800.

It'd have to be absolutely perfect condition for £2k!

Bike 1
Bike 2
Bike 3
Bike 4
Bike 5

There's a few on there that had starting bids around £900 that didn't sell, too.

I'd just go for any jap bike. Don't focus on one model, none are different enough to matter.
Have a look on motoforum too.

For a track bike, the suspension is the only thing that really massively matters I would say compared to a road bike.
However, if you're just starting out, stock suspension should be fine - I've happily help my own in the fast group with stock suspension on various jap sports bikes and sure better riders would have gone even faster Smile.
Road fairings often actually crash a little better and you can save weight by taking stuff off yourself.

Shocked Shocked

where from?!!

i think i'll take 2!

edit:
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201002350064116/sort/priceasc/usedbikes/engine-size-bikes/490cc_to_675cc/model/cbr/make/honda/postcode/sl50bb/radius/30/page/1?logcode=p

thats the price id expect for an FY, not immaculate, 30k.. £2k.

private, maybe knock £200 off.. so at least £1000 over what you say you've paid

if you can find em for under a grand id love to know where from (i realise ebay can net a bargain sometimes but thats not the 'usual' price)

You would have been welcome to buy my one.

It even had a full Micron race system. The fairings were all ratty though, and it had nearly 40k miles on it.

It certainly wasn't worth any more, I think you hideously over-estimate those bikes.

A lot of people do try and sell FX/FYs (road) at silly money. Always have. If they're in excellent condition, people do seem to pay it, now and then. Similarly you see older models also being offered at fairly high money. Maybe it's because they've got that 'Hondas last' thing and people are willing to pay a bit more cos it seems like a better bet than the alternatives?

Whether they're 'worth' the prices folk ask for is another matter. I'd say generally they are overpriced.

and at £750 you are not going to be too previous about it, so enjoy riding more than a £7,500 bike Smile

with the spares it looks a bargain. .. did you get WoW? a must if you intend to run track rubber on the dry set. ...

It's not beyond the realms of reason, especially if it's a Cat B.
But yes, I'd certainly check up on it carefully.

Aye just looks like a cheap one to me. You'd obviously give it a check over, but if it is nicked is there a way to do a check on it?
