Alot of you probably know I picked up the bandit last week.
37k miles on it, and although it's been a well serviced and maintained bike, mechanically. It's been left to rot cosmetically.

https://i902.photobucket.com/albums/ac227/pitbikeben/Photo1624.jpg

It's all structurally sound, But it's just MINGING. It's only got 2 previous owners, Rob had it for about 6 of those years. He used it to potter to and from work on, rain or shine, and only really cleaned it where you can see.

So far I've whipped both wheels off, Taken them to work, stripped the tyres, disks and sprocket off them. And cleaned/polished the fuck out of the wheels to try to bring them back to life a little bit.

The chain/sprockets are fairly new, but again, never cleaned. The sprocket, I had to use a buffing wheel attachment on my air drill to clean the shite off. It's cleaned up quite nice.

Disks, again, spent ages cleaning them.

New valves and sprocket nuts. Chucked it all back together. Just waiting on delivery of my Metzeler RaceTec's. Very Happy

https://i902.photobucket.com/albums/ac227/pitbikeben/Photo1626.jpg

And this is how the bike stands now.

https://i902.photobucket.com/albums/ac227/pitbikeben/Photo1627.jpg

LOADS of cleaning to do. Replacement footpegs wil be on order. I've had to buy a new set of gaskets for the lower end of the engine as the startermotor pulley cover gasket decided to let go the other night, Covered my left boot in oil, and quite a bit found it's way onto the rear tyre. Laughing

While I was buying the gaskets, I decided to just buy a new set of engine cover bolts too, Stainless socket cap ones.

USD forks are the next thing on my wish list. Just hunting around trying to find out which ones are the most straight forward conversion.
Busa forks seem to be fairly easy. The only downside is I will loose my front wheel speedo drive, and will have to revert to another speedo unit.

However, the conversion it's self seems pretty easy for the Busa forks. Stem bolt needs pressing out of the bandit bottom yoke, and into the busa one.
A small shim needs turning up for the main hole in the top yoke, just to reduce the diameter by about 5mm.
And the wheel bearings need changing to ones with bigger internal races.

The rest is quite simple.

A colour change is also something I've thought about. Just the frame seems a bit long winded. It's an engine out jobby if I want to do it right, and at my new house, I dont really have the time or space/facilities to do it easily.

Will update when some parts arrive.

My mate has an RF900 I believe they share alot of common parts, I think. Anyway to fit TL forks he had his yokes milled out to fit. But didn't do the swap.

Anyway what I'm trying to say is you may not have to get new yokes you could mill yours out for the TL forks, or my mate might flog his yokes if they fit your bike as he never went through with the swap.

Milled out yokes. Shocked

Surely that leaves very little metal around the fork legs?

So I repeat: ffs ride it better than the previous guy, but on the new rubber.
Not the best of condition, but I'm sure we have all seen worse - can you put up some pics of the worst bits before / after?

Umm, that picture is not my riding. I'd ridden it to work that morning, Along the M20. No corners.

Later that night, I completely rid that right hand chicken strip up at Ebbsfleet. Had about 3mm to the edge of the tyre. Smile

Left hand side was unmarked however, as there was a STUPID oil crankcase breather pipe hung above the chain guard, Which dripped oil all over the left hand side of the tyre. Rolling Eyes

That's been removed now.

And yeah, I'll try to get a picture log going.

Okay, Scrapped the idea of getting Racetec's for it. Mainly because I think the bike will just rip them to pieces in no time. It's not a nimble sports bike like what I've had previously.

I've gone with a pair of Pirelli Diablo Corsa III's. Smile
They are getting delivered tomorrow, for a grand total of £80. (For the pair).

Brand spanking new, and straight from Pirelli. w00t! Wonders of working in a center which deals bike tyres.

Corsa III's being the dual compound, so ideal for the Bandit.

Will update more tomorrow.

And any chance of a picture of these milled out yokes?

I still managed to run a set of Corsa III's into the ground despite having loads of tread on the sides by going up and down a straight commute. They're not as hard in the middle as you may think.

Nice little update today! Smile

I decided to cart my pit bike down to Folkestone in the back of my Golf. I've got enough run off in the carpark at work to set up the carb properly.
When I arrived, my Diablo III's were there! w00t!

I got them fitted up, loaded the Golf back up, and headed home. Stopping at Laguna's in Maidstone on the way.

Picked up some nice little bits for the Bandit, And on the way through, I stopped in at my Mam's house to grab my gaskets and engine bolt kit.

Got home, got to work, and the bike is now 99.9% TACK free. Last bits of shit to remove are the foot pegs.

When I did the engine bolts, Surprised surprise, One of the shitty gold ones snapped. Rolling Eyes

Luckily it's right at the top of the starter motor cover, So no oil will leak out through it there anyway, Plus, it's the middle of 3 very closely spaced bolts.
Think I'm just going to be a complete bodger and cut the head off another bolt, then stick it in with a blob of silicone. It's not leaking oil, and the new bolts are 10x stronger than the previous ally ones where anyway.

Bit of a bummer. I HATE bodging things, but dont really have much choice with this one.

Think you might get away with that on a 1200 Bandit, but no more. Just checked my GSXR11 and the fork uppers are 51mm diameter, and no way there would be any material worth mentioning on the top yoke if it was bored out for that.

All the best

Just got in from a rideout with Luke.

Right hand fork seal has given way on the Bandit, It's dropping quite a bit of oil.
And the clutch is slipping slightly. Sad

Think it's where I've been giving it a beasting all of a sudden, The poor bike's probably never been ridden hard in its life.

So I guess I need to replace the clutch...

As for the forks, Dont really want to be buying seals as I wanna change the forks to USDs anyway.
I've got a set of seals in my garage for Suzuki GSXR600 SRAD forks. Would these fit my Bandit forks?

MMmmmm Shiney. *Lick*

Might be worth finding out if its the plates being worn (can't imagine them lasting long), the clutch adjustment, or maybe the springs are tired or need uprating. To be honest all of the above wouldn't be a bad idea.

It's a hydraulic clutch, I wasn't aware they were adjustable?

Might start by replacing the springs. Dont want the bike to turn into a money pit really.

Hi

It isn't adjustable. However the first thing to do is take off te front sprocket cover and clean up the slave cylinder and clutch pushrod (will be covered in rubbish from the chain). Also bleed it at the same time. That might well fix the clutch slip problem.

Plates are not too difficult to do, especially as I presume you have access to a decent air impact wrench. There are a couple of tiny screws in the centre of the clutch though.

As to fork seals, looking on Wemoto they list the Bandit forks as 43x54x11 while early GSXR600 seals are 45x57x11.

All the best

Keith

I heard back from my mate he already flogged his yokes.

He said there was loads of room to mill it out, and that the Standard forks for his where 43mm and the TL forks where 46mm ish. He said he had to machine up different wheel spacers too. 46mm doesn't sound right to be but he should know he has one!

The TL forks are 43mm diameter upside down items. As they are USD you need the outer diameter of the uppers in the yokes and these are far larger. For an idea of how much larger the outside diameter of the fork seals are 55mm diameter.

All the best

This is what I though, but then don't alot of usd forks get narrower at the top?

Just looked on ebay

50mm diametre at the top yoke and 54mm at the bottom. stil that isn't a great deal 3.5mm per side at the top and 5.5 at the bottom.
