PostPosted: 07:31 - 28 Jul 2010    Post subject: MOT Question Reply with quote

Hi,

The MOT has expired on the other half's bike.

Just wanted to check what I can and cannot do.

I know I can ride to a pre-booked MOT appointment but should it fail, does the bike have to stay there to be fixed?

As in, can I or can't I then ride to another garage to be fixed for the retest?

Thanks

You are allowed to ride it back home again as long as you could prove it had been booked in and it failed.

I suppose you would be ok if you rang the garage first and it was booked in again rather than riding there on the off chance they will fix it.

Sounds good - thanks Thumbs Up

Its a mates garage so should be no problems getting them to fix it.

Cheers

I dont understand why people worry so much about mot's its only a £60 fine tops if you do get pulled!

I do think you would be truly fucked if you crash though!

Technically, if the vehicle is roadworthy it is roadworthy, MOT or not. Similarly, if it isn't roadworthy, having an MOT certificate means nothing.

You can go to and from a pre-booked place of repair and a pre-booked MOT test station. You've got to go the most direct route and can't make any detours, I believe there's also something to do with the repair place or test station needing to be within a reasonable distance,

You could still be done if the police found something about your bike that meant it wasn't road worthy.

You can ride it back but there's a retest fee if you take it away. No retest fee if its sorted onsite.

I thought if riding without MOT would invalidate your insurance?

They might give it a go. But if you check your policy you'll probably find they don't specify anything about an MOT (doesn't apply to vehicles under 3 years old for example) but they will say that it has to be roadworthy. If you crash because of mechanical negligence they'll try not to pay out, MOT or not.

That's pretty much how I understand it Thumbs Up
My uncle was in the motor / repair trade, and that's how he described it to me...

I know its not a points offence but £60 saved can only be a good thing

Thanks for the clarification.

Nothing about the bike looks unroadworthy so should be fine if the po po do decide to pull the bike over.

Makes sense so I will stick to the above...bit arbitrary with the 'reasonable' distance though...

For example some people on here find it reasonable to travel 300 miles to go see a bike, others 50 miles...

Not always true, my failed last MOT on rear brake shoes and I had 5 days to fix it for a free partial re-test, or within 10 days for a partial fee. Check with the garage about that.

My local MOTers are pretty good on retests, they're cool with it being taken away the brought back within 10 days for free.

What is booked legally?

My 'booking' is normally ring up.....

Me: Got any MOTs today
MOT: Yeah we're not busy today, come up after lunch
Me: Ok then cheers...

and thats about as booked as it gets.

That's not booked.

Pre booked is arranging to go for an MOT at a specific time, they take your details and write them in a diary or such like.

If you get stopped by the police when you're on you're way to the garage and they catch on to your lack of MOT then I would expect them to phone the garage to confirm what you're saying.

Pre booking a specific time shouldn't be a problem, the test stations know that you're only legally allowed to ride there if you've pre booked an MOT.

Valid if the MOT has run out completely, but surely there's no problem if you in the last few weeks of th previous MOT.

Different if it's a re-test of course

You're right - there's no retest fee if you bring it back the next working day.

Just beware that if you take it for a retest and it fails, it'll invalidate the remainder of your existing MOT, and you still won't have the new one...
I'm not trying to be a wet blanket on this one, but just for you to be aware

On the plus side, if it passes, some garages will post date the new MOT for up to 2 weeks, so your renewed MOT would effectively be valid for 12-and-a-half months instead of just 12 Thumbs Up

Hi

Think the dating of MOTs to cover the extra bit from the previous MOT is now done automatically. Not really anything the MOT tester can do except take a massive risk of logging in a few weeks later to say he is doing the MOT.

All the best

Keith

It's actually a month, so if your mot is due 28th August 2010 you can take it in today, pass and your mot will expire 27th august 2011 meaning 13 months mot.

You can have the test done up to a month before your current MOT expires and you get a full 12 months of new MOT.

"You can renew your MOT up to one month before it expires without affecting your annual expiry date. You can find out when the earliest date to MOT your vehicle is by checking the front of the pass certificate.".

I was under the impression that this wasn't the case. You still have your old certificate, and an MOT runs for a year, not until the next test.
