See the adverts at the bottom..

Wisdom says get a two piece as one piece ones tend to let water in at your crotch...

Though this is inconsistent... as I had full goretex gear on and in torrents in Siberia I got my crotch wet.

The biggest issue with rain suits I find is sweat and breathability... sure my mountain rain trousers kept the rain out but I would still be wet from sweat on the inside.

nothing is going to keep you dry in a torrent. even the best give up in heavy rain, especially as itchy said, the arse gets wet. the water pools around there and you just cant keep it out.

best thing to do is protect yourself from the elements as best as you can and take spare clothing in a bag just in case.

+1 Thumbs Up

I used to wear a 2nd pair of waterproof trousers under my 1-piece rain suit to get around just this problem. Mine was a Spada and it was ok unless it was *really* wet. Bear in mind that spray on the motorway after a downpour can be wetter than the rain itself... and it lasts much longer. Most heavy rain only comes in short bursts but the spray can last hours.

When I commuted by bike in the winter I tended to wear my 1-piece whether it was raining or not as the wind protection was fantastic.

My Tech7 waterproof trousers kept the worst Wales could throw at it (and that was a lot last year!) out for about a year before starting to leak. Only £15 @ M&P.

For the top, just make sure your waterproof layer is the outside layer - wet, heavy, cold textiles ("with a removable waterproof lining" aka you will be stuck to it by sweat as well as the outer being soaked through... who's idea was this?) are no fun when you're going to work, and even less fun when you have to put them on wet again to ride home.....

you can get thermal lined over suits, would this stop the sweat issue? im not sure. my pants over jeans for my 2 mile commute get a little sweaty even on a short distance.

My step son used a Hein Gericke one piece for a year and a half, until he grew out of it. Prob the best £20-£25 I've ever spent on kit.

I use a Dickies Vermont rain suit.

Clicky

Had some torrantial rain a couple of days ago and only let a little bit of rain in around the inner leg (because they're falling apart after 2 years). I can't fault them.

I have a Tech7 one piece rain suit that goes over my textiles and it's been fantastic, even in the worst stormy downpours. Not a single leak whatsoever. My textiles are crap in anything other than a shower, despite treating them with various waterproofing agents, nothing worked as well as the rain suit in my opinion. Thumbs Up

Iv'e got an Oxford 1 peice rain suit and my crotch has never got wet, keeps me dry all the time!

Or buy a dry suit, I had one when I had my Jetski, you could fall off, end up in the water, and be bone dry Very Happy

Last winter i bought some waterproof, breathable overtrousers for about £10, and a cagool (sp) style waterproof jacket for about £15 for commuting to work. just made sure the trousers had elasticated heels etc.

kept me perfectly dry all winter, and small enough to fit under the seat when not wearing!

HTH.

I've had success with wearing breathable waterproofs under and over my kit at the same time. Wearing them under provides some more insulation by keeping wind out and also protects your normal clothes underneath.

Also works to windproof leathers on a cold ride when you don't want to ride in textiles. Stinkwheel has some interesting tips too but I cannot find the topic with it all in.

I recommend Army Goretex and the hi-vis breathable outdoor gear.
