Soz to hear someone nicked yer MBX. From what I remember these were pretty classy bikes (for their time), a doddle to derestrict and mine went like stink.
None of these wippersnappers here would believe me but I wouldn't bet against an old (derestricted) MBX vs the new NSRs. (Or is this just nostalgia of me first bike?). Mine had a Stan Stephens Stage 2 tune, Micron Expansion Chamber and indicated well over 100mph.

Well, it happens. I wasnt too chuffed at the time, but with the value of an MBX it wasnt worth claiming on my insurance. Depressing really.
My MBX had an Allspeed exhaust and an S&B filter. Most I could get out of mine was just past the final mark on the clock (90mph was the finial marking). However it revved higher than any other MBX for the same speed, and I had raised the gearing. Suspect the 2nd hand engine I had put in had been played with, not sure what gearset would fit. It was really quick on acceleration. The friend I sold it to used an Autolite kart race plug in it, and that made it rev out far further (added 1000rpm to the rev range), but the cdi unit burnt out (maybe coincidence). Then someone pulled out in front of him. I bought it back and got new forks and front wheel for it, and buzed round on it for a bit.
Not the most reliable bike around. Got it down to 2 hours to rebuild the top end of the engine. Silliest things that happened were it sticking on full throttle (hint, if the throttle ever suddenly feels stiff, DO NOT open it fully to try and clear the problem) on the slip road from the M1 onto the M25, and the cap blowing off the ATAC chamber, landing up with me riding along with my gloved left thumb jammed over the hole to try and keep the noise down a bit.
I had mine when I moved up to Nottingham, and for quite a while I used it to ride down to Portsmouth area for the weekend. Nice 300~400 mile weekends on an MBX. It also got a trip over to Northern Ireland, and I got cut up by a car in Liverpool on the way back so swung round and gave the driver a dirty look then realised it was my old Maths teacher from school!
All the best

Hi Keith
I know there are lots of older riders who are taking their test but normally they do the direct access route and dont spend a year riding around on a sports 125. The only reason I went down that road was to make sure biking was for me.........and oh yes it was......no more boxes for me
All the best...Hibby |
