I went for a Chinese takeaway last night and there was a sign stating the following;

Credit cards only accepted for purchases ova £5.

Ova? FFS. I know people think they're cool (or are ill educated and/or lazy) writing like that on a forum or in a text message but on a shop sign? Really? Neutral I suppose I should be grateful for small mercies. At least they wrote 'accepted' and not 'excepted'...

This is a subject which I seem to be thinking about more often these days.

With the advent of the internet age we get to see much more of other people's writing than we ever used to. The spelling and grammar we see every day is surely of a much lower standard than it was say about twenty years ago? I'm not just talking about text speak either (although that is also a massive pet hate of mine too Gagged ).

The usual ' there, their and they're ' type errors have always been commonplace, but starting sentences without a capital letter? Not finishing a sentence with a full stop? The basics of our language seem to be completely ignored by the 'next generation'. Obviously languages are constantly evolving, but I dread to think what our will look like in 20-30 years time Pale .

I was going to point out the public service I was providing, backed up by bringing his attention the missing full stop from his signature. Alas, I fear it would not be appreciated.

It's a Northern Monkey way of saying 'piss off' - similar to 'give over'.

Bad English pisses me off too, when it is blatant laziness and ignorance. Honest spelling mistakes, and apostrophe confusion etc I can living with, along with well known and accepted abbreviations.

The crap that comes out of plenty of kids inkwells though is enough to annoy me. I write out in full on the internet and in texts, it is conducive to easy communication - and I can fail at that even with good writing.

Now for a fervet spell check....

That was kind of my point. More shops write CD's rather than CDs and MOT's rather than MOTs but surely no-one in their right mind believes that 'ova' is correct, or acceptable in a professional environment. Still, it's got to be a good thing for those looking for work (who maintain some ability to use their own language)!

You're only allowed to pay by credit card if you have eggs. A curious rule, but straightforward enough.

They probably spent a large portion of their life sewing trainers in a sweat shop for 18 hours a day, which doesn't leave much time to learn the english language and all it's intricacies, give 'em a break.

When I went past ten mins later he had put a sign on the door saying:

"personal only"

Spotted a belter at work last week in the canteen. Someone had decided to be helpful and put up a handwritten price list with a 'bacon sammich' on it!

One of my personal favourites is on here all the time: 'I brought a new bike' who the hell brings a bike? Surely you BOUGHT a bike???

I have a level of understanding for the foreign contingent for whom English is not a first language. I used to travel a lot and although my verbal skills were fine I found it really hard to be letter perfect in German, French, Italian........

Maybe you could write them a note in Chinese explaining the issue?

Sure, except the owners might have to find someone chinese to translate it for them Razz

It's not about incorrect tense or sentance structure etc, it's about the use of txtspk in a professional commercial environment.

Totally agree with what the OP says.

I also have a thing for companies that use '4' or 'U' in their names.

Annoys the fcuk out of me for no reason.

Makes them seem really cheap.

If they are English then sic 'em boy, they deserve it. Next time your in there arm yourself with a big red marker and correct the spelling, old school style. Make sure you have collected your order first.

I can live with shit English, as long at it's doesn't come from an official source or an authority, 'cos people are just stupid and I'd be would be wound up all the time if I didn't just let it go. (although every time I see 'I would of said to her..... etc', I want to kill)

I was in outpatients at Northwick Park hospital last week to have X-rays taken of my wisdom teeth, and the sign asking visitors to remove jewellery in advance just made me squirm. Fuck inclusion and equality, if you can't use English properly you shouldn't be in a position where you communicate with the public.

At Sonisphere this weekend there was a stall selling a T-shirt that read 'This T-Shirt Rock's'... and people were buying them. Morons!
