Ok, I have a Kymco Pulsar 125. In the last two or three weeks it's fried 2 voltage regulators/rectifiers, can anyone suggest why?

Two possibilities come to mind:

1. Inferior quality pattern parts. Are they genuine Kymco ones, or very cheap pattern ones off ebay?

2. Poor earth. I assume the reg/rec grounds out through the frame and back to the battery this way. Make sure that the frame earths are clean (not rusted/corroded) where the reg/rec connects to the frame and where the battery negative connects to the frame.

A reg/rec is not meant to fry. To kill it generally needs heat, which is caused by it being place in a very hot place (unlikely if you're mounting it in the original place) or its getting lots of charge in but can't dissipate it (poor earth).

A third alternative is to try fitting a reg/rec from another bike. Kymco are a small manufacturer so probably copy electrics from Honda, Suzuki or Kawasaki. A reg/rec is a fairly generic unit, so you will be able to fit one from another make and model altogether by identifying the wires and fitting a different wiring connector. Honda 250/400 superdream ones always had a repuation of being tough.

Thanks for the reply. The problem started when the bike just seemed to stop charging one day. I sourced another regulator from someone nearby, genuine kymco part, and replaced it. This fixed the problem, although I'm now back to square one. I'll check all the earths later. Cheers.

Yeah, sounds like an earth problem is more likely,
Kymco used to produce honda parts back in the day and their genuine parts arnt to bad to be hones.

Break out a multi meter and see what you can turn up. Have a google and try dig up a service manual for the bike.

Best regards
