General consensus will be to get one that fits you properly.

It doesn't have to be expensive, but as long as it's a good fit, it should do it's job. Thumbs Up

The best fitting and most comfortable one you can afford!

Why would being a newbie make a difference to your decision?

Ah, I see, that makes a lot more sense than 'which helmet protects a newbie's head the best?' which was what I thought you were going for!

Get yourself down to Hein Gericke, or any gear shop really, and try loads on, all the makes, lots of models, and go with what feels best. Any decent shop should be more than willing to help you with this, and they should be able to ensure you get a decent fit.

Have you got any biker friends who can go with you?

Also, remember, there is always, always room for haggling, especially if you're buying other gear at the same time, my mate got a pair of £150 gloves thrown in with a lid the other day, just try your luck, worst they can do is say no...

They won't let you try it on then you walk out of the door.......

Never ever buy a helmet without trying on for at least 5 mins.

You want something that is a tight fit but not so tight that it hurts.

The inside is made of polystyrene, so it will mould to your head over time, and get a bit looser.

Health and safety (thankfully something i agree with in this case). Helmets are a one impact piece of personal protective equipment, and don't always show when they've been impacted. If you were to go out the door, drop it / fall over, and take it back, looking intact, they were to sell it to another customer, then the customer could die as a result of the helmet being "used" already, so when his head hits the floor, it won't protect him (as you'll have already compressed the energy absorbing inner/inside layer, which you can't see).

The shop could ultimately be sued (in theory, quite apart from it being simply good practise). And quite rightly too, it's a rather important piece of equipment to be taking silly risks with, and any sensible rider will look after their helmet accordingly.

But yes, do check it fits well even after a few minutes. In the shop!

Trying them on now might not be a great idea as your still growing, so they might feel different in a bit. As a first helmet buy something cheap off ebay (though not second hand of course!). Chances are whatever you get will get dropped at some point, this would ruin a posh helmet. Plus you will probably want a new helmet after a year or so anyway, so why spend a fortune on one that won't get worn much?

Those flip up ones can be great, they can also be shit so they are a bit of a gamble and are probably best avoided at first.

As a new biker you definitely want a helmet with a hole in the front that you can see out of.

HJC FG-15 is cheap at the moment, bought one when I realised my AGV GP tech fit crap after the pads settled in.

The HJC is about £100, worth every penny Thumbs Up .

^^^^That was my first lid too although mine was the all black and white one. Is now my back up/spare lid. I paid a good deal more than 49.99 for it too, that was about 2.5 years ago now though.

Is that a HJC CS-R1 "Samurai" helmet?

If so, it's a 1* SHARP helmet, and as such i would use a higher rated helmet if i had the choice.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

But I think 'Samurai' and 'Fang', just refers to the colour scheme.

The model of helmet is HJC CS-R1, which is a one star rated helmet, shame 'cos it's a nice looking helmet.

You can get 4 or 5 star rated helmets for the same price.
