Up until now, I've been chaining my bike to a big concrete roller. Unfortunately, the chain was about as thick as dental floss, so I bought the Almax series III. I also bought, and rapidly installed, the Y anchor. Not the bigger version, the original. In my rush to get it and of course being a moron, as stated above, I failed to notice that it doesn't take the series III (it does almost fit, but the chain can't get around the kink).

So now I'm stuck. The chain is fine for when I go to work, but for at home I'm going to have to buy another, slightly thinner chain. As far as I'm aware though, the only chains that can't be cropped are the Almax ones.

If anyone has any ideas of what I should do now, please advise. I'm hoping that getting a second chain, even if it wasn't as good as the Almax, might deter most people. And I'm not sure if it would affect things much, but the bike is under a cover, can't be seen from the main road and is placed behind a car. So if the weaker chain was cropped and someone wanted to lift it into a van, they'd have to lift it over the car first.

So yeah, I'm a bit of a dumb fuck.

Thieves have been known to move cars to get to a bike so don't count on it mate... Confused

If you know the right people or have the raw materials it shouldn't be too difficult to make a ground anchor yourself Wink flog the Y one on ebay.

Unfortunately, I've already stuck it in the ground. I was in a bit of a rush to get everything sorted, so assumed it'd fit Sad

Ride broke through an Almax very quickly I believe.

There are ways and ways - remember you're (probably) basing your faith in Almax on Almax's own publicity....

If they want your bike, they'll have it. Buy a slightly thinner (still Almax?) chain or set up a new anchor. Don't lose sleep.

That's exactly how my first bike got stolen, good job they gave up half way down the road because they couldn't smash the steering lock, the fact that they would have looked well dodgy lifting the front end every 2 wheel revolutions looked obvious it wasn't theirs, they dropped it and left it for a neighbor to notify me.

Yeah the only way someone would be able to take it, if they got through the smaller chain, is if they lifted it into a van as the Almax would still be through the frame and wheel. Very possible obviously, so I'm still pondering what my options are.

I'm tempted to find a metal worker and see if they can fashion a piece that can be threaded through the anchor and welded. But then they'd have to do it at my house, which might cost a bomb.

I'm curious as to how they got it past your car. Did they just move the car somehow?

You're locking both wheels to the frame yeah? Or disk locking the front and chaining the rear to the frame, as otherwise if it's in neutral, surely they can lift it into the rear wheel and wheelie push it down the road?

Holy dog shit, you're right. It's easier to chain the front wheel to the frame, but I'll chain it to the back from now on. It aint big enough to do both though, sadly.

Wink thought I'd check.

Might want to try these things too.
1. Park in gear
2. Flick the engine kill switch.
3. Turn the fuel knob to off
4. Apply the steering lock
5. If you can, fit a lock so that it prevents your kickstand from being raised (stops the engine starting)

Basically none of these things will prevent a theft but they will delay the thief Smile they're also a pain in the arse for you mind Smile

And get a cheap disk lock for the front or they will just lift the rear wheel and wheel it on it's front Very Happy immobile wheels mean they will have to carry it and even a 125 is a heavyweight to manhandle after a few meters.

No they aren't not really, considering all the preparation you go through before hand, like earplugs in...helmet on, glasses/sunnies on and positioned, gloves on...zips up, etc.

Good things to point out, all of which one does automatically, but never given it much thought. (would have agreed but have no karma left). Cool

Ahhh it was on my driveway. I live at the end of a close, overlooking it actually, so there is no reason for anyone to come through my driveway. From the street, it would appear there is no bike, just a car. Still, they were obviously opportunists...but very bad ones at that, thank god. Besides a scratched tank (replaced) and a new steering lock needed, if also suffered a lost mirror, which i was adamant i was going to find it, as i knew they wouldn't have taken it, and about 3 days later, found it! Hoorah!
Although I still have the bike - it is never unchained, thus a lesson learned.

Wow, that sounds exactly like my street too. If I see anyone out my front window it's cos they're on the drive. In fact, the street curls back on itself, so you can't even see the drive unless you go right to the end of the street.

Anyway, to put this topic to bed, I've fitted a second anchor. So now I've got two anchors and two chains...less worrying now Smile
