I drink a metric fuck ton of diet coke but unless it's in by another name, it doesn't contain fructose (glucose or sucrose.)

Might be an American thing though.

Apparently its the Phenylalalalalalalalanine we should be worrying about. (I have no idea why though...)

Aspartame and Phenylalanine are in practically every sugar-free thing.

Your body turns it into methanol and poisons you. Tasty stuff.

Toast also gives you cancer. Nasty stuff Wink.

I did wonder why you'd sent that link to me - as above, not an issue for sugar-free stuff.
A lot of own-brand soft drinks now use sucralose, which isn't considered so nasty I believe.

I don't think plums contain corn syrup, no idea what is actually in it but I would guess not exactly the same constituents that make up your fruit. It's in everything in America but not here we have slightly more strict ingredient regulations. I don't know the full facts on artificial sweeteners but have been told they're actually poisonous and damage your brain, I have always thought (without knowing this first) that there's something iffy about them though, I'd rather risk my health with natural sugar than put sweeteners in things and I don't touch 'diet' varieties except 'light' mayonnaise.

Yes, as far as I know 'fructose' is what you find in fruit - while sucrose is 'normal' sugar you'd buy, which is further refined. Corn syrup is a mix of the two and another compound it seems.
The internet is a bit ambiguous, but the general consensus is that it's not really used in the UK. It's used in the US in place of adding normal sugar to things - ie for instance in cake or fizzy drink presumably, rather than as a substitute for 'artificial sweeteners' in diet products.

It's actually quite hard to avoid many artificial sweeteners - majority of things that say 'no added sugar' have them in. I've read up on them in the past and decided I'm not overly worried in the grand scheme of thing.

HFCS is highly refined.

It's used loads in the USA because they grow shitloads of maize.

We tend to use sugar from beet (grown here) and cane (grown from our old Caribbean colonies) in our food manufacture.

HFCS is the reason most yanks are so fucking fat.

Oh, and the article in the link has nothing to do with Diet Coke or any diet drink, as it's talking about a type of sugar. Diet Coke is sweetened with aspartame (an artificial sweetener - not from corn Wink )

Aye, Molly put it up on facebook, and I had a little snoop about and double checked. Only things I can remember containing HFCS et al are Lucozade/Powerade etc.

Although that might be high-glucose syrup.

As for the Aspartame = cancer thing, meh, I don't drink enough to care, and I'm a smoker. Give a fuck. Life is carcinogenic.

My sister refuses to eat low fat stuff because of the trans-fats. Shes a morbidly obese chemist. Link perhaps?

Laughing

I'm pretty sure cancer is real..... Shocked

I'm also pretty sure that the constant exposure to refined foods/ goods etc does the human body no favours at all....

Am I concerned personally? Am I fuck!

We all have to go sometime, and I'm not going to skimp on things I find enjoyable just to try and screw a few more years out of life further on down the line....

I'd rather use my body to the max and knacker it out while it's in its prime, than tread softly and have to endure extra years of old age....

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

Cancer exists, but as said, EVERYTHING is carcinogenic. Basically, anything in this world that isn't pure water will eventually (in high enough constant doses) give you cancer.

Was there not something in Diet Pepsi that made you seedless?

Also, sausages can give you cancer. It was in the Daily Mail. The chap who sits behind me swore blind he'd never eat another sausage.

I love sausages, I can't get enoug of them so it comes as a huge relief that cancer is in fact not real.

Or something.

Isn't Methanol a form of alcohol? If so, that should be a good thing no?

On the upside, you'd be saving the undertakers a job though.

Thumbs Up

I had an old flatmate who used to lecture me about aspartamine, I honestly could give a fuck, I was buying 6 packs of diet tango that was loaded with the stuff for 50p from a cheapo store below our flat. I never understood how someone who was on the large size and smoked 40 a day could care so much about this chemical and berate me about it constantly.

A bit like my Dad, he'll always say "have you had anything to eat" I'd say yes or no. Either way he'd say, "You have to eat you know..." I know this too, but you also have to know when to stop, something he never used to be good at as evidenced by his very generous circumference.

Thumbs Up

There are major issues involving alternatives for sugar. We never really know what we're drinking and eating from all those processed foods. Woody has a good point. Would rather gain weight than gain cancer.

Do you ever know what's in something that's not 'processed'; even fruit grown in your own garden, do you know every chemical that makes up that fruit?

People have been getting cancer for a long time before the serious processing of food as we do now.

Well the thing is everything is carcinogenic, people in the olden days didn't get cancer as they would seldom live beyond 35 years old so before their DNA even got a chance to be damaged, they would already be in the ground.

Last pure food I ate was probably Siberia or Mongolia, where I watched a goat be slaughtered.

And of course it's quite possible those people died of cancer at their average age of 35 in some cases.

I find stuff like that irritating too!! My neighbour is a vegan, works in a health food store and looks really unhealthy - she also drinks wine by the bottle and smokes tailormade Confused

I have an issue with margarine/fake butter too based on the same thing really. Why eat artificial (manmade) stuff when you can eat butter and sugar? If you're worried about being healthy and not being overweight either eat less or do more - simples!

Skin cancer is another one I don't quite understand........smother your body in chemicals and cosmetics and then worry about a bit of sunshine. Get out and enjoy some sun and don't get burned by covering up with clothes or sitting in the shade..........it really isn't difficult!

Phew................feel so much better for that.............off out into the garden now to top up the tan!! Mr. Green

You should try working in catering, the few times that I have you see these huge people (who have to enter the door sideways) who order several portions of chips, several pies sausages and enough peas gravy etc to make something completely disgusting (One person used to being in a huge punch bowl and it would be filled to the brim with chips and gravy urk!) and they would buy a bottle of diet coke as if to make up for it.
