I'm considering taking the Hornet through a bit more winter this year instead of using the boring CG day in day out.

Last year the Hornet went away late September and came out in MARCH, to me this was a long time to have it tucked away, especially when I was using the slow CG instead. I'd like to get as much use out of the bike as I can.

The bike probably isn't worth as much as it was last year, as it cost £2600 at the time, privately its worth about £1900-2000 now and has done a lot more mileage.

Would it be silly to take it out more often and get it covered in salt? Knowing I could be using the hack CG.

Sorry if this thread seems lame Laughing

Thankyou,

Tim.

to me, having a bike is all about riding it - i can't see the point of putting the bike away for winter if you still have the urge to ride it.

Why was it away from September until June? I put my TZR away for winter but even then it was only away from November to early March.

Because of all the salt and crap. I took my old GPZ through winter and it was just so shit, I'm not sure if that's because it's a GPZ or because I took it through winter.

Confused Yep, but it would need cleaning everyday the amount I use my bike, and it's not always convinient to do that, especially in the freezing cold.

If it's quite high mileage, people are going to expect it to be a bit tattier.
Lather it in ACF50 and do some reading up on 'Advanced riding' techniques, to avoid crashing.

So use the CG when there's salt out and use the Hornet for all the time that there isn't. September to June isn't all gonna be salted!

There will still be salt on the road even if they aren't being gritted. I've been riding for 4 years and haven't had an off yet, this will be my 4th winter on 2 wheels. Touch wood.

Not much when you've had decent rain to wash it off. Just play it by ear.

What sort of condition is the Hornet in? If it was near mint I'd be reluctant to take it out in salty conditions. (Get some ACF50 on the bottom yoke at least.)

You could sell the CG and get a CB500/GS500 type thing for similar money probably.

It's just a bike, not something precious... ride it and enjoy it.

If you think it's too dangerous in the wet or colder weather then don't ride it.

It's precious to me, I've spent a lot of hard earned pennies keeping it well maintained and clean. It's in much better condition than most I ever see, though its not mint.

My bike is the most expensive thing I own. What would you consider precious?

Mine is pretty much the only thing i own...but what do you think is going to happen? Lots of people enjoy their bikes all year round... just do what makes you the most happy. If you want to take it out in the winter, maybe just start off slowly on shorter journeys.

There is something to be said for the CG in the winter. Though the only hairy moments i had last year was on my ZX9 in the worst of the snow.

ACF 50 all over. Rinse it down with a hose after you've been out, it only takes a couple of minutes and give it a good wash every weekend or every other weekend.
You could apply a thin coat of grease to stop the salt and crap getting at the metal too.
My bike only gets put away in heavy snowy weather and has no corrosion as I take the time to ensure it's prepared for the winter.

Doensn't giving it a good clean at the weekends remove the ACF-50?

An MZ250/300 is the ideal winter hack, an excellent compromise. Reasonable performance for a commuter, quite fun in their own way, and built to withstand harsh east German winters.

Only real problem is finding a good one, and then finding somewhere to buy spares from. But they're excellent bikes for the inevitable crap/icy/wet/salty weather.

Only if you use a more competent cleaner like Muc Off or something. I tend to at least rinse off any alloy components with cold water before putting a bike away after winter use though.

If it were me, I'd stick to riding the CG through winter. I found mine quite a lot more fun than the other bikes I had at the time. Plus, washing it with Hammerite provided more protection than ACF50 could ever muster.

Yea its not fun on a big bike, i'd love a pit bike or something for winter, maybe an enduro i couldnt give a shit about.
