Thought I would have a rant about my first get off the bike shouting match road rage incident.

Taking my usual ride home from work on the tenere 600. Coming into a 40, there is a bit of traffic that slows to 25ish. Spotted a guy on a ped at a right hand junction, see the road is clear so slow down to let him out. Eventually he gets the hint and pulls out. So we trundle along at 30 for a bit (doh, its restricted ped) and leave the 40. Coming into the next 40 there is an opportunity to overtake so I blast past ped boi and then slow down to 30 as we come into a 30. Its a bit of a nasty road with a blind crossroads and a school. The car behind that has been tailgating me since I let the ped out is now right up my chuff, so I hold a middle and to the right line, sitting in his view.
Coming into a - frankly pointless - 40 I throttle up and by the time is NSL about 400yards up the road the car is off my chuff and falling back fast. I do a sensible speed on the tenere 600 in an NSL. Its not a fast bike and 80 is mechanically sympathetic. I am Mechanically sympathetic.
By the time I come round a bend into the next 30, there car is not in my mirrors. I stick to 30, as there is a school on the left and im catching the traffic in front as it is.

Check the mirrors and the car is back and trying to overtake. I open the throttle a bit - and it is only a bit, to close the gap with the car in front and keep him behind. He responds by staring to pull across me when we are level. Im gonna loose so start breaking, He pulls in front and slams on the breaks. Cue horn from me.

I follow him, close but leaving enough gap for some more silly breaking.
Traffic comes to a stop and I decide Im going past. He has left enough gap in front to pull in, so its on. By this time I want a word with this idiot. I pull in front, stop about 10 meters later with the traffic and he drives into the back of me, bumping the rear wheel. I stick the stand down and now want words.

As I get off the bike he is out the car, asking why im getting in his way, deliberately, slowing him down. I am asking why he is trying to kill me, and what is is fucking problem. He says its a 50, I say im doing 30 in a 30 so whats his fucking problem. He is back in the car.

I contemplate smashing a light, kicking a door, getting the phone out and getting a picture of this guys car lodged against my rear wheel.

By now im holding up the traffic, figure fuck it. get on bike.

Parked on the curb to take 10 to cool off. Half pissed off I didn't get a photo.

I may be misinterpreting what you're saying here but in my book, deliberately accelerating as someone has pulled out to overtake to prevent them getting back in again is a bit twattish at best, dangerous/careless driving at worst. Regardless of how clever a place it is to overtake. I suspect this is where he lost his rag because I know I would have.

Crossed my mind when he overtook me. Trouble is if you cant get away from them, idiots like that are happy to put you in a ditch and drive off.

I suspect its an offence to accelerate when you realise someone is overtaking you. If its not, it should be. Very dangerous.

Please dont do it again, even if you dont want to be overtaken.

Or if you do do it again, at least realise that its you who is being a twat, and understand that by being a twat you are taking a risk and it could back fire on you.

If someone is faced with a choice between an oncoming car, or pushing a bike sideways, you know which they are going to choose.

It happens....

Majority of car drivers seem far worse at blocking overtakes/filtering progress/ closing the gap to stop you pulling in.

It is.

That said this was a dose of road rage that could have been nasty. If there is a prick in front, let him go on his way, don't tailgate him because he pissed you off and personally i'd rather him where I could see him, rather than behibd me.

Yes he's a cock, but you did yourself no favours.

If someone is driving like a cock. I want them either in front of me where I can keep an eye on them or a LONG way behind me.

but there was not really a safe space for him to pull into in front of me as I was catching the car in front because of traffic up ahead. So it was obvious, if he overtook he was going to run out of space and cut me up. The increase in speed is maybe 2-3mph (im in 4th and only plodding along) .
Im not racing him here as soon, as he was level with my back wheel, I was closing throttle, changing positions shaking my head and getting ready to break. I think whatever I did, and whatever space there was, this guy had decided he was coming past.

Maybe twatish of me as I had to break harder, but I was kinda hoping to avoid being cut up.

I think he lost his rag when I left him coming out of the 30. By the time he had caught me up again he just wanted to get past me and didn't care how he did it.

This would also tie in with him claiming I was holding him up and that it was all 50. (its not, its either 30, 40 or NSL)

I'll add that I too have in the past accelerated as someone is overtaking. It's the extent of the acceleration that's important here I think.

When I've done it, it's been as a prelude to disappearing entirely from the overtakers frame of reference, leaving them with both ample room to pull back in and noone in sight to be shirty with.

Mostly happens when joining a multilane road from a sliproad and a following car immediately pulls out a lane to overtake me (you can almost hear them huffing), then finds himself inexplicably sat alone in the overtaking lane with a rapidly shrinking red dot in the distance.

Occasionally though, if I'm in the mood for toying with a boy racer. Let them think they've got you. Look round, thumbs up, then show them just how much they haven't got you by. Immature, yes. Dangerous, no.

On my tenere 600 you would loose a filling before you would win a race.

You should have left him past, it is far safer to have an idiot in front of you rather than behind.

Had a touch of this the other day.

I used to ride (and still drive) at 30 in a 30... the number of tailgaters has caused me to up this to 33-34 on the bike when there's other traffic around which feels a lot safer. (The plod with the speed gun around the corner at the bottom of the hill yesterday did look disappointed the biker was actually doing 30! Very Happy ).

Anyhow, toddling along at 33 in a 30 still wasn't enough for the Golf behind me. I'd been up to 37-38 to see if I could shake him, but no use, so settled back down.

Then we reached the limit change (to 50) and I cracked the throttle a bit as usual upto 53 (my natural speed for that bit - I don't think "I'll accelerate to 53 exactly" I just open up a bit, change up a gear, steady throttle, look down and it's usually 53). It was only when I went to steady throttle that I realised the Golf's been sat in my blind spot trying to overtake me - and now we're nearly at a blind crest. So I slowed up and let him in front.

He probably thought I was a racing cunt. I felt a bit apologetic (should have been watching my mirrors better) but also thought "TWAT!! That was never going to work!" If I'd have been racing, I'd have dropped a gear or two. Or maybe used full throttle.
The sad thing for me is he probably now thinks his car is faster than a bike. It's really really not. And my bike's restricted.

The joy of being on a bike is, of course...... I went back past the impatient knobber less than 2 minutes later as he sat in traffic Rolling Eyes

It is so easy to fall into this, and so difficult to maintain self control when dealing with some overly aggressive twat who appears to want you dead. So I get where you are coming from, but as you already know it wasn't a bright move.

I had something similar to this once. I was riding pretty quickly with some huge old merc giving chase. Not really a race, but i doubt he'd have been going that quickly without having something to aim at. I slowed to 40ish in a 30 limit, but as i came round the corner i saw that the next corner was covered in shit. Not figurative shit, but actual shit, cow shit to be specific. To be fair the farmer had put up warning signs so i slowed to about 20mph for the corner. On leaving the corner i accelorated back up the speed and checked my mirrors to see how far up the back of me the merc was. It was gone. Baffled i looked around to see him struggling to stay along side me in an attempt to overtake in the short straight before the next corner. I had to close the throttle to let him overtake, follow him round the corner then overtake him again afterwards.

Some people just look at your speed at a given instant rather than judging it over a distance. This guy decided i needed overtaking at a dangerous spot just because i slowed for a hazard in the road, despite my normal pace being higher than his.

ditto. if some tit is determind to get past i just sidle over, slow down and when safe wave him past. then hold a massive grin and sometimes a wave when we hit lights or traffic and i glide on past. cagers 0 bikers 1.

no doubt he was a dick though buddy. roads are full of dicks in cages. i hate it when they intentionally prvent you from filtering, that said alot actually move and give you more room in very slow moving traffic i always lift my fingers or wave if its safe, nod etc. whichever way i can to thank them. they will do it for the next biker then and so on. cagers already hold hate for us, lets not make it worse.that comment is not directed at any of you btw.

I honestly don't understand how bikers get into and get upset by these situations. Chill out, relax, and if there's someone around you (in front or behind) driving erratically, then get the fuck away from them. You're on a bike - this is what bikes do well. They're fast, nimble, agile and small. Why sit there in front or behind someone you don't feel comfortable around when you could so easily be well away from them in an instant. And why antagonise them whilst you're at it?
