I had an advisory on my M.O.T for the front brake.
"Front roller brake test indicates slight fluctuation of the brake effort [3.3.ALD]

The tester thought the disc was warped.

What can cause a disc to warp?
My bike only had a few thousand miles on the clock.

Excessive heat, disc lock or an accident can warp a disc.

Binding brake calipers usually. Do they need a strip/clean?

Hard use on track can do it on some models, although that's pretty rare now.

Thanks for the suggestions, could be any of those I suppose.

Funny thing is the front brake seems really good, too good in my opinion.
I never noticed there was a warp but now he mentiones it I do think I can feel the uneveness when I brake.

I ordered a new disc, pads and SS brake line.
Maybe I should strip and clean the caliper while I am at it.

It's not something I have attempted before, is there anywhere I can read up on instructions/tips for cleaning a brake caliper?

To clean the pistons/caliper you need to take the caliper off, remove the pads, move the pistons out and give them a clean (brake cleaner or WD40) dont get WD40 on the discs or pads.

Push the pistons back in and replace pads (if pads are shiney then give then a gentle rub on a paving flag to get the shine off) then reattach the caliper(s).

Job done Thumbs Up

You dont mention the bike, so dont know what kind of brake it is. and you say 'disc' not discs, so is it a bike wit a singe disc set up?

anyway, if its a floating disc, warn or gummed up float buttons can cause the disc to 'jam' giving similar effect to a slightly warped disc.

if it is warped though, doesn't neceserily mean a new disc; if its a very small amount of warp, then possible tohave the disc skimmed by a machine shop. Often a lot cheaper than a new disc.

Thanks pax, I have fitted pads before but never cleaned a caliper.
I have some WD40 so will git it a go.

Mike, it is an XT600E 4PT, single front disc.
The parts should be here in a couple of days from wemoto.

The pads have plenty of life left in them but I understood it is good practice to have new pads with a new disc. The braided line wont hurt either.

Do not use WD40 or any petroleum based product, it will damage the seals. Best to use brake cleaner or even a little brake fluid if that's not available.

I've done that so many times when i was younger, only just enough tools to take the pads out, no file or rough emery, nice flat paving slab, THAT'LL DO!

Nice one man.
