Is there such things as aftermarket fuel tanks?

I'm thinking specifically of a range situation. I know long journeys, on motorways or such would perhaps involve reasonable fuel economy but looking round at bikes it seems between 160 to 200 miles on a tank is pretty reasonable dependant on the bike.

I wondered if there are aftermarket fuel tanks available for some bikes with bigger capacities in order to increase the range between fill ups?

Any ideas?

For off road bikes you can get lots of them, David Lambeth supplies most for off road bikes and off road styled bikes.

Problem is they are not cheap £200ish for a plastic tank is not unusual.

Once you start getting into metal tanks the cost increases substantially! There is a metal 41 litre one from African queens which is £2300!

There are also Heck tanks from David Lambeth which require a £60 mounting plate and are £70 per side, they make the back end of the bike fat though and add 15 litres per side. Adventurers use one for water and one for petrol.

The cheap alternative is to find big tank off another bike which comes as standard and fit it to your bike. The Bros 400 had a terrible range but with a few mods you could fit a NTV650 (19.5 litre) tank to it. You can do the same if you can make the mounting plates for it. you can get this one

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HONDA-NTV650-NTV600-REVERE-PETROL-FUEL-TANK-MORE-PARTS-/270625569789?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts

For £35.

Oh and bewary of fire! My NTV as an experiment had two auxillary tanks it once using a tank off a bike, it had a lot of range. But was impractical.

Which make and model of bike? I was able to get a larger tank for my cx500 some years ago from Honda, the larger tank was designed for the Australian market and I was able to get one through my dealers. I am unsure how an additional tank would be dealt with at an mot test and how an insurance company would look at the tank.

if the bars don't hit it and there is sufficient space so it doesn't trap your fingers then big tanks are ok, you can always keep the old one and swap it back if you want.

I have no idea which bike yet!

I want something that wont be too much for my first road legal bike.
I feel a bit drawn to Honda XL650transalp / bmw f650gs

However, I also feel a little drawn to hornet 900's and suzuki bandit 1200 (perhaps with a fairing), which might be a little big Very Happy

Sorry, I mean auxilllary tanks in addition to the original tank, the cx conversion was using a genuine Honda tank and the insurance company accepted it as standard fitment but I would worry a bit about additional tanks as as far as I know they must be made of metal for U.K road use. I used to carry several gallons of extra fuel in my vt500 combo which doubled as ballist but thats a different kettle of fish lol Mr. Green

99% of enduro/dual sport bike tanks are plastic along with bikes like my BMW R100GSPD which has a plastic tank as stock.

its only certian states in the USA that dont allow plastic tanks but its not enforced.

Probably plus it was an N.I mot centre which doesnt help. I ended up using the tank of a sp370 but changed it back as soon as I got out of the mot centre.
