Great, in MCN this week their saying we may be soon restricted to this amount of power to help cut down on speed related accidents.

This is one of the worst ideas I've ever heard. Apparently there's be an increase of deaths from 01 -02 something like 40 + but that's obvious when there is anincreasing number from things like Congestion Charge and peeps wiht 2 much money jumping on powerful bikes and getting cocky.
One plus from it though is perhaps if the litre class were two die then other classes like the 400cc & 250 will reopen to fill the market gap. ____________________ Dean Stone #777

not everyone likes the supamotard look I love the fairings of my bike as it gives the race feel and you feel like you have a proper sportsbike. ____________________ Dean Stone #777

Hi
It is already the case in France (Germany has an insurance restriction which makes bikes over 100hp VERY expensive). I suspect it will happen just because politicians want to be seen to be doing something (however pointless it is), and this government has regularly stuck its nose into areas and screwed them up (anyone fancy doing some target shooting with hand guns?).
It might kill the litre sports bike class. The 600s only barely make a real 100hp.
Yes you can derestrict them, but then that depends on whether they insist on them being restricted in such a way that it could not be tuned. Hardened steel restrictors cast into the inlet ports would be VERY difficult to remove.
Motorcycle death rates are high compared to other forms of transport. The majority of car / bike accidents are the car drivers fault, but then bikes are increasingly being involved in single vehicle accidents. Ban bikes and the would reduce the number of road deaths by around 600, which is an instant 20% reduction in the number of road deaths. The accountants regard each road death as costing the country around £1m (most of which is imaginary costs such as lost output and "human costs"), so that is £600m they regard as being saved.
Not sure what the solution is. People do die riding bikes. Some of that is from playing silly B's, some from being "unlucky". Excess speed might be a factor but the difference between hitting something at 150mph and 180mph is not likely to be relevant. Alot comes down to experience and observation, which are difficult to test for, and just about impossible with the driving test being so far removed from reality. While I don't think the 33hp limit is a bad idea (although the actual power level may be wrong), I do think that it is madness to make no differentiation between someone who does their test at 17 with no experience and someone who does their test having been riding for years, let alone the chances of someone passing their test and then not riding a bike for 2 years before buying a Gixer 1000.
I try not to preach but I do get worried about people with limited experience going out and buying quick bikes just after their tests. I know how quickly they can get you into trouble and I also have known too many people who have been killed.
All the best

That sucks, notice nobody's mentioned limiting the power made by cars? If i could afford the insurance i could go out and buy a ferrari which would just as dangerous to a new driver as a big bike is to a new rider. I cant see it happening seeing as it would piss off a few hundread thousand voters, lets hope eh? |
