Just a few questions really.

Considering now that i have my full license, i was considering eventually when i'm good financially to do so, is to get a Dirt Bike for some off road fun, i have not decided yet what cc but its kinda irrelevant atm.

So what i would like to know is, what are the prerequisites that i need to be able to do this?

Do i need the bike insured?

Do i need anything special or to do certain steps to make this happen?

And then lastly, what are good bikes for doing this?

No matter if its a 50cc or what a nice recommendation for off road dirt bikes that are reliable.

Thanks allot!

I thought the title was " Dirt Box Question" and was going to give some good advice about lube.

Prequisites? Nothing just a bike thats all and some guts.

Though I would buy some off roader armour I didn't wear any on my Russian hell mud ride.

An off road bike is useful too, maybe get something like an XT600E , they are incredibly reliable cheap to fix and are indestructable post 1999. They are also road legal so you can get to off road sites. Just bung a couple of off road tyres on it and it can carry you to off road locations.

Granted it is heavy and underpowered but it pulls like a tractor and has absolutely nothing to go wrong on it!

If you're truely off road, you don't need anything (possibly a SORN, if it was previously road registered).

If you're using unpaved byways, then you're using public roads and your bike, therefore, needs to be road legal (MOT, tax, insurance) and you need to wear a helmet.

Simples!

Try the stickies in the offroad section for actual advice.

Depends what you mean by "dirt bike"

If you mean motocross riding on a closed circuit, then obviously you don't need anything except a way to get the bike to and from the circuit.

If you're talking about "green laning" then they are still roads so you need everything. A license, tax, insurance and a road legal bike.

I live in somerset, with the Qauntock hills rather close by, full of dirt track that can be ridden around on for miles, lots of steep slopes etc that i would be interested in going around.

From what it sounds like, i will need the full deal, License, Tax, MOT etc.

And to get there in some speed i will most likely need atleast a 125.

I dont want anything super powerful, maybe as far as a 250.

I cant stress enough that cheap, and reliable need to be in the equation.

So recommendations for road legal dirt bikes from 125cc up to 250cc would be most appreciated.

You'll want to check if the routes you plan to ride are even legal first. And the usual suspects for a reliable off roader. There are a few threads in the offroad forum, so just do a search. Thumbs Up

How much is cheap?

It would be much easier to advise on a bike with a budget in mind.

You can't go on most of those as they're bridleways.
