PostPosted: 20:31 - 24 Aug 2010    Post subject: MCE, or Motorcycle Direct insurance any good? Reply with quote

I know the views are mixed on insurance compaines so its a bit of a difficult question to answer.

Basically im coming up to my 17th birthday, and i have my nice fazer sitting in the garage waiting to go once i pass my test (hopefully). the insurance details came through on my current bike (derbi gpr 50 2007), with a renewal quote of £408 fully comp!!

For the last couple of months i have been using gocompare to get me quote for my insurance on the fazer. they were all coming back at around £600TPFT. This was with hastings bike team.

Anyway, just went on now to check, and i have just got a quote for £404.33TPFT, from MCE. this is also backed up by a quote of £468 by motorcycle direct.

obviously this is considerably cheaper, and they say, if its too good to be true, it usually is. (i have learnt this the hard way before).

anyways, my question lies with the fact that both of these are very respectable quotes. now, has anyone used these companies before? or are using them? what are they like?

Some info would be good as i dont want to get caught out on this, i cant afford to as im pushed to the limit at the moment.

thanks !!

Just to clarify - both are not insurance companies, they're brokers/intermediaries. Both have more than one insurance company as carriers, so just because one person's had good experience of MCE via Equity Red Star, the next person might have had bad experience via Highway, for example.

MCE offer free breakdown cover. I've not had cause to either claim or use the breakdown cover, but they've had no issue changing details mid-term for nowt.

Yes, but be sure to check what you get. Cover wise, helmet/leathers, brakedown/euro cover ect.

Not a catch, just a make sure you understand who you're insuring with. You'll still be covered when you take out insurance with either, as they have what's known as delegated authority to place cover on behalf of certain insurers.

It's just best to consider not only the intermediary but also the actual insurer who you're going to be placed with.

Assuming that was to me, I'm with MCE, the actual underwriters are Royal & Sun Alliance.

Yeah it was. Okay, the company the quote came through is called KGM Motor Policies at Lloyd's. anyone heard of them before?

KGM have been around years but they've recently been bought out by Canopius. I've got a friend that works for them in Fleet, and the buy-out doesn't seem to have affected them any.

It's a Lloyds market though - so don't expect miracles.

I was with MCE last year, didn't make any sort of claim with them and had no problems but for some reason when my renewal came round this year they want triple the amount of last years premium. A quick look around and I found this years insurance for £40 less than last year.

So nothing bad to say about them really just make sure you shop around when you get your renewal next year. Thumbs Up

I was insured with Motorcycle direct, they were ok i suppose, although I was insured TPFT and was hit by a drink driver jumping a red light who turned out "might" had been uninsured. They didn't want to know and wouldn't even send someone to inspect the bike until it was established that the drink drivers insurers would cover him and they was falling over themselves to offer me a hire bike etc. The handling of my claim was then passed around 3 different people over the course of 6 months, everytime i rang up to see if they had progressed anymore it was someone else who was assigned to my case. All sorted in the end but as this was my first claim I dunno if this is a typical experience most people go through.

Was with MCE last year, didn't claim though so I don't know how they are beyond their sales dept.

Free breakdown cover is nice.

I was with MCE last year didn't claim and still lost my second years no claims because they cancelled my policy 22 days before it was up, I fully payed for it at the start of the year and when i bought my ninja i phoned them up to ask for a quote and it was to expensive so i told them i won't be renewing with them the following year so as a result they cancelled my poilicy. Really was not happy.

What nobody has mentioned is that those 2 quotes are fine. Even if they're lower than normal (a mistake basically) once you have entered into the agreement and paid they have to honour the insurance. There's been a few cases here recently...

You let them shaft you? Wow.

They have no grounds to cancel your insurance policy because you won't be going with them for insurance next year.

I agree with Molotov here. They had no right to cancel and its a breach of contract. At the end of the day the contract you enter into is there to protect both you and the company who sold you the policy. Many people think its to tie you to the company for a year. Thats not the full truth of the matter, Its layed out in such a way that there can be no miss understanding on either side. If you have paid a years insurance they are in breach of contract for not supplying a years insurance.

Unless you done something to breach the contract on your side.

On a side note, I was with KGM for 2 years when I lived in Northern Ireland and they were fine for me. Now I've change biked and I've insured with Motorcycle Direct because they offered the cheapest rates for fully comp.

I've been with motorcycle direct for the last year, I have no complaints about them. Admin charge for changes to policy was £25 though.

I tend to find that's with most insurance brokers. Thumbs Down

All i did was buy my ninja, call them up and got a quote for 1900. I told them i'd looked else where and the ninja will be insured costing me 350 from a different insurance company when my DT insurance had run out with them.

Pretty sure you can still sort it out then, though there will be others on here who can help far more. What they did was wrong, they have no ground to cancel the insurance for that. Therefore you should have another years NCB Guessing you've got the ninja insured now? Not sure how it will work out now... Confused

But I definately wouldn't have laid down and take it, did you not post here when it happened? People would've helped.

Nah i couldn't post it at the time mate. I'm in the navy so i struggled to get access to computers while my ship was in and out of harbour.

Ninja is insured now yeah and i lost my second year no claims because it was 22 days short. I still have my first year though.

I got bored argueing with them when i did eventually get time to call them so i just thought i'd stomach my losses and get on with my ninja.
