Oil it up

I have recently cleaned my Air Filter (it's a K&N). It was cleaned of the filth and put back in. I read it should be oiled up before going back in. A friend said there was no need to oil it so, it wasn't oiled.

Is there a need to oil/re-oil the filter before replacing it, and if so... why? :\

There is a need to oil it.

The oil helps trap the dirt, the K+N filters have quite a rough weave compared to a conventional paper filter. The oil helps the dust and other crap stick to the filter material.

Depends how you "cleaned" it.

If you washed it then it'll need to be re-oiled ideally.

If you took it out and banged it on a work top to get rid of most of the crap then you probably don't.

You can sometimes get the oil from Hein Gericke or a bike dealers, and on-line for around £12 (eBay)

Well it's £12 for the cleaning solution and the oil, and given you only need to clean it every 50,000 miles or so and it'll do about 10 cleans/recharges, I'd don't think it's bad value for money especially if you intend on using K&N filters in all your bikes over the coming years. I mean basically you'll probably only ever have to buy one kit in your life or do as me and a mate do and share one. Thumbs Up
