Quite typically how long can you store petrol for? I.e. in the tank of a bike? I went to a motorfactors today to go and buy some of that liquid steel gum stuff and asked him about some fuel stabiliser.

He said nope, petrol today is rubbish and it will separate if you leave it, while Gaz always said you could pour in some in the tank (and run the bike for a few minutes) petrol stabiliser.

While some people say just top up the tank as much as possible and the fuel won't have air to react with, while others say drain the tank.

Who is correct? Confused

Thanks.

For the sake of few pounds I have never bothered using old petrol. Thing is I never know how long is too long to leave petrol.

If you're going to stand your bike up fill the tank to the brim, turn off the fuel tap and drain the carbs. Fuel can't gum-up in the carbs if there's none in there to gum-up, and it can't evaporate from a full tank since there's none of the surface of the fuel exposed to air.

How long does it take to gum up carbs roughly? Is 3 months enough?

How longs long.

In October for the last 4 years, i've filled my Z's petrol tank to the top, wheeled her in to the garage. Then wheeled her out in March. Will be doing the same this year.

I always thought it was best to keep full, to stop the chance of rusting on the inside.

Come my first ride though, I make sure I use it all.
