I ordered a used brake disc off eBay, and it arrived as thus (see attached picture).

Just to clarify, there was no padding on the inside at all, it had been single-wrapped in old motorbike magazine pages, with some brown tape holding it all together.

As this provides essentially no protection if the disc happens to smack and hit other hard objects as it's thrown around in the delivery van on the way, is it possible that the poor packaging could've make the disc unsafe to use? I mean, having opened it there's no obvious cracks or anything, but could it have been weakened on the way?

What would be more useful is if we could see the actual disc rather than the packaging.

At first I thought you were going to show us a picture of an actual damaged brake disc... if so then fair enough. If not, then brake discs are made of steel, and as such do not need to be wrapped up in eggboxes in order to survive.

So you're saying that you'd happily use a brake disc after it's been thrown around unprotected? I was thinking if it hits something equally hard it could get damaged.

OK, that's all i needed to know - if they can take that crap OK then i'll use it Smile - just wanted to be sure.

You are buying a used brake disc from ebay, so you can't be that precious about your brakes otherwise surely you would buy new?

The poor packaging is the least of your concerns about making the disc unsafe.

Even brand new brake discs are only delivered in a thin cardboard box.

Unwrap the thing before you start worrying about it's condition.

Here's a simple crack test for you..

Dangle it on a piece of string or hold it lightly.
Tap it with a pen or your knuckle.
Does it 'Ring' like a little bell??

Yes = its fine
No = either your holding it too tight so it cant vibrate or it's cracked

Brake discs are tough things so I would be very surprised to find it cracked.

I'm sorry but I very much doubt there is a way a brake disc could be damaged packed like that they are solid steel. I accident investigator told me he saw a bike (thunderace) after the own went into the back of a truck doing about 160mph The wheels and forks near enough disintegrated and the brake discs where still in shape but half buried in the engine block.

Depending on the disc configuration, I would be concerned that it might now be warped if the soft inner has taken a good clout.

I too wouldn't be happy with receiving an item like that.

But if it spins up true, then you have got away with it and I can't foresee any other problems! Thumbs Up

Short of hanging it over the side of a bench clamping it down and walloping it with a lump hammer I can't see how.

Looks like a rear disc to me so no inner, (size and the fact there is only one) even so it would have had to taken a big hit to bend any part of all disc. I get countless DVDs and games through the post, alright they are in jiffy bags but any whack that would affect a brake disc would sure smash the shit out of a DVD case in a jiffy bag and I can't even remember getting a smash up DVD.

Having a wheel dropped on the disc would worry me a lot more than this - even if it was dropped, seems unlikely there could be that much force going through it, as the entire thing (made of metal Smile) would be free to move with no extra weight behind it.

I'd happily throw a disc down the road and then fit it and use, think how much grief it takes when in use, some delivery guy from dhl isn't going to do much to it without hardware and some intent

That wrapping looks fine. Discs aren't exactly fragile. If there's no obvious damage (and I doubt there will be), fit it, use it. Happy days Wink

you obviously havent worked in a dispatch depot.. Ive seen stuff thrown around with complete disregard... Im not on about a 90 degree bend in a disc im on about 2-4mm warp. They really do not give a shit about anything. They would throw it just to see IF it breaks...

Ive even bent discs trying to ride off with a disc lock still on (not much but enough to cause the brake lever to feel like its pulsating) and this is what I meant..

My braking was uneven, the tester thought it was because the front disc was warped.

I did consider buying second hand but could not be sure it did not come off a damaged bike.

I ordered a new one along wiht other parts from wemoto.

It was an EBC disc and came in a carbboard envelope.
I too thought it could have done with better packaging from the manufacturer but having said that the braking is so much improved now so I guess it was undamaged on it's postal journey.

They are made from metal e.g. steel

It will be fine unless you can obviously see it is bent or damaged and you can do the "ring" test as described earlier.

Warping will be FAR less than 2~4mm. For example on the 1200 Bandit the service limit for runout on the front brake disks is 0.3mm.

All the best
