The Platform (Netflix) 8/10

Did someone from here recommend it a while ago? Or was I listening to something about it elsewhere, I'm not sure.

Dystopian.
Dark.

Frustrating ending, but it strengthened the general sense of hopelessness portrayed throughout the film.

I watched it last night. That was one weird film.

I think the general message was about socialism and if people took their rations and nothing more there was enough for all. But it wasn't half odd, and the ending was pretty pathetic.

Fantasy Island. 6/10.

Strange very strange, Maggie Q and Michael Pena lead a generally unrecognisable cast in a weird tale of woe and disaster where you're fantasies become reality but with a twist.

Maggie Q is still hot property but her obvious eye candy is not enough to carry this mostly disappointing film.

6/10 at best.

I recorded ‘Straw Dogs’ off the telly the other night.
A bit of an old classic Thumbs Up

Do you mean factually (science based) or just dull?

I seem to remember the physics was actually pretty sound, they had Kip Thorne as an advisor.

There's nothing *wrong* with it, it's just a tad dull. Just like 2001 A space Odyssey.

Example
Takes a Saturn V sized booster to get them into space from Earth but the Ranger craft manages to leave the water planet (and the ice planet) all on it own.

Seemingly endless fuel.

Some fair liberties taken with timings (large wave right on top of them in one shot then takes ages to actually get there)

That's true, plus the planet must have had a hell of a gravitational pull in order to warp time so much, so how did they escape it?

I must admit I slept through the second half, but that might have been something to do with the medication I'd just been put on Sad

The highest rated film on Amazon Prime at the moment is Contagion. A film about a virus that originated in China. Laughing

We have the real thing yet people want to watch a movie about it. Weird things, humans.

It's not a particularly great film either.

All-star cast, but the plot is non-existent.

I watched The Martian. [6/10]
Better than I thought it was going to be. I'm not generally a fan of Matt Damon "MATT DAMON!" but Le Mans '66 has redeemed him in my eyes.

The Martian seems excessively and sappily positive and unrealistic in the times of Trump and Brexit. Would NASA spend a billion dollars just to launch food for one guy stuck on Mars? Would China?

Doubt it. We can't feed all of our own, so we're sending an experimental rocket to Mars? Doesn't really track. Still, it was decent escapism.

As with most movies he's in Donald Glover totally stole the few scenes he was in, and the rest of the cast really brought it. Damon seems to work well with nobody to play off and yeah I wanted to believe. It's a shame the cynic in me took away the suspension of disbelief. It's also ironic that it wasn't a science problem that did it, but an economic one.

I thought it was a good watch.

The Martian atmosphere isn't dense enough for dust storms to cause damage though so based on a false premise.

Really?

I'd heard that dust stroms would be a major problem associated with the first colonial settlements on Mars.

I thought it was a decent film 6/10

Its probably heavily based on the SARS outbreak. But watching it, it was slightly eery to see covid19 reaction play out similar to the film.

Humans, weird and yet creatures of habit / predictable.

A big problem in that the dust gets everywhere and coats solar panels.

It's also gritty so not good for moving parts

Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker 2/10

It had a huuuuuge stamp across it that said "DISNEY COURSE CORRECT - PREVIOUS CONSUMERS DID NOT LIKE THE LAST ONE SO WE FIXED IT WITH VERY BAD STORYTELLING!"

Fantasy Island 2/10

It passes the time but the plot was all over the place.

The reviewers agreed with me, saying 'The only thing scream inducing about this horror movie was the fact it's clearly set up for a sequel'

Insidious 9/10

Don't know how I missed this film from 10 years ago. First genuinely good ghost film I've watched in ages.

Not one to watch if you suffer from the willies though Shocked

Z - creepy horror film, thrilling, best one I've seen in ages, 8/10

Hush - a good thriller from a decade ago, William Ash stars in a entertaining 90 minute flick. 9/10

Phantom 8/10

Not a horror film but one about a rogue Russian sub. It's an oldish film 2013 and I found it on Prime.

Well made and with a good cast including Ed Harris and William Fichtner. Really enjoyed it.
