A Monster Calls

Be prepared with the Kleenex, and I'm not talking moping up fapage.
I liked it, child actors don't usually inspire but this chap was good.

It was the usual heavy duty special effects time waster. For a storyline this actually had one. Without giving spoilers, its not a story that has not already been done before, it was just folded differently. Some real funny moments in it though and of course the obligatory Stan Lee appearance. If you are a marvel movie franchise fan then you'll get what you expect.

Recently watched this again and enjoyed it the second time round as well. Also that's coming from someone who's been getting a bit sick of comic book films.

Assignment 6/10

If lone hitman and forced gender reassignment are your things you'll like this.

Throws up some interesting gender issues (stop yawning at the back) as well as questions of justice and retribution.

Sigourney Weaver features as a mad genius Doctor, channeling Dr Josef Heiter from Human Centipede.

Rouge One 4/10 - probably didn't help I've been looking forward to watching this. It just felt corny, CGI might give you amazing explosions but they still can't do a realistic human face, and who thought stealing Marvin from the hitchhikers guide was a good idea and wouldn't at all get annoying?

There were a few nods to the original films to remind you the franchise wasn't always this bad, but it felt like they were scraping the bottom of the star wars story barrel. But don't worry it looks like they're planning another Rouge type film, I assume staring [spoiler alert] bits of dismembered bodies.

I watched this last night and I give it a solid 8. I did struggle at the very start with the timeline and trying to figure out where it slotted in but by the end of it I was left in no doubt.

I even enjoyed the "cameos" from the "not the Droids you are looking for" and a very nice touch at the end hammering its place into the timeline.

My only issue with these new (old) Star Wars movies is the effects, Way back in the 70's when Star Wars was launched into our universe it was bits of string and stop motion and compared to the last 4 movies made they now look dated and fit AFTER those movies. It just feels and looks weird watching fantastic special effects which covered everything from epic space scenes to cast members and then watching cardboard cut outs and bits of string with slow "sword fights" instead of CGI epicness.

Prime example of what I am talking about is here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DI8kkR9G0Q

Yoda vs Palpatine.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sq51w34Hg9I

Obi Wan Vs Vader

That kind of continuity error lets the whole series down for me.

They retconned that by saying that IV - VI featured geezers, cripples and barely trained yoofs.

It was definitely better than The Force Awakens. The only thing that was a bit off was the CGI and Forest Whitaker. They shouldn't have hyped the CGI. If they never mentioned anything about dead actors apearing in the film thanks to CGI, I would have been nicely surprised, rather than questioning the film makers abilities.

7/10, a classic story of the rebel scum demonising the empire.

The cameos were alright, younger viewers will probably miss most of them. Even the old sound effects from the original films were present. They even used the same camera angles and scenes in many places. Felicity Jones did a surprisingly great job.

As others have stated, keeping up with the timeline was a bit troublesome at first. But the moment they talked about the Death star blueprints, I knew what was going on. I genuenly thought this film had nothing to do with the series upto that point. It felt like a very generic unspecified sci-fi film that happens to have Star Wars theme.

Is that two reviews with your rating slowly slipping? Smile I knew the film was set before episode IV and was about [spoiler if you've been living under a rock] stealing the death star plans. That was the problem with the movie, you knew the outcome, but even then it managed to be incredibly predictable.

I didn't know about the CGI character but spotted it within 0.23 seconds. Until they've perfected a realistic human face don't bother. Verging onto politics but I thought a lot of the acting was naff, I think the last thing I saw rude cargo pilot boy in was Plan B's film (Ill manors fam), but hey they ticked the diversity box so that's what matters.

The Force Awakens delivered what I was expecting, I think with all the hype this one failed to for me.

Star Wars - The Force Awakens - 8/10

I watched this about a year ago but as Rogue One appeared, I thought I would watch it again back to back with the new one.

Rogue One - 7/10

I just didn't think it was as great. It was enjoyable to watch as there's actually nothing quite like Star Wars in general to watch. Sure there's space films but not like this.

Spoiler Alert

I'm so confused with these new films, are they remakes or the originals or are they prequels, etc? There was a death star in the last one (Force Awakens) and Kylo Ren was talking to Vaders helmet all mashed up on a table then in Rogue One, Vader is back and so is the death star? Also in Rogue One, felt there was a big lack of action with light sabers and bad ass characters / villains (aside from about 12 seconds of vader). The Leia at the end for 2 seconds looking young (I'm so confused as I'm not really a huge Star Wars fan and don't really know the whole story well).

Fantastic Beasts and Where to find them - 8/10

Enjoyable film set before the Harry Potter films but had Harry Potter music playing in parts in the background?

The Great Wall - 6.5/10

Saw Hetz rate this 4/10 and I'd disagree because of what it is. Let's be honest here, the film is about monsters attacking the great wall. As soon as you get that stuck in your mind, all the rest of the absurdity that happens through-out the film is acceptable, because... monsters. Matt Damon's inexplicable accent though? Wtf was that Laughing If you want an over the top but really cool visual film to watch for 2 hours, whack this on.

Well, I did not expect this to be so good. I didn't even realise what I had put on, I thought it was some kind of western but it was fucking awesome. I haven't seen Guy Pearce in many things recently but he was absolutely terrifying in this and you could see the menace within the first 5 minutes of the film all the way to the last.

Watched this based on your review and it was spot on.

Dont laugh but i thoroughly enjoyed watching Graveyard Tramps, Invasion of the Bee Girls. Its 70's scifi horror soft porn and cheesier than a pound if brie in a sauna but actually well scripted and acted with an obvious sense that the actors knew what they part of but giving it their all none the less.

Might watch Fury as its on telly on Friday night. Is it any good?

The Imitation Game - 3 rotors / 150,738,274,937,250

Bummersnatch does his usual Shelden Cooper. Charles Dance and Mark Strong anchor it but aren't in it nearly enough. Keira Knightley looks weird and seems to be doing a parody of her own accent.

Loosely based on a thing that happened on planet Earth with wires and such, but completely unnecessarily dramatised, jazzed up and generally mucked around with for no reason other than that the scriptwriter felt that the audience couldn't deal with reality, even though it was more interesting than what was actually presented.

Oh, a Septic, I am all astonishment. They just can't help "improving" history to what it ought to have been, can they?

A sadly missed opportunity.

Yup, Big Bang Theory in tweed. I cant believe Cumberbatch is rated as anything more than a run of the mill ham.

Edit: I've given up on it after Kiera Knightly turned up. Tardy bitch. It was like someone was trying to give the Bletchley Park story The Comic Book Presents treatment but without the humour.

kill the Irishman (2011) 6/10
popped up last night on Netflix so thought I would give it a go

story of danny greene in 1976 whos death resulted in the collapse of organised crime in Cleveland usa

film was about his life and the attempts to kill him would have been better if they used some of the budget for special effects rather than just for a cast

starred christiphor walken, vinny jones, bloke from full metal jacket who went mad and loads of other big names that I forgot

The Legend of Barney Thomson - 7/10

For some reason, actors seem to think that a comedy film gives license to act badly.
However, this film is so funny, all is forgiven.
Ray Winstone is usually a luvie I try to avoid but this performance certainty goes a long way to get him back on my radar.

I finally got the chance to catch up on a few movies.... 2 honorable mentions:

The Great wall: 5/10
It wasn't the worst movie ever, decent action etc. but just too colourful, cheesy and predictable (would have got a 4 if he'd kissed her)

Logan: 4-9/10
I'm still on the fence with this one, it's definitely better than most of the others, the decision to include swearing definitely helped as I imagine Wolverine would swear a lot..... I was hooked from Charles saying something along the lines of "F**k you Logan" early on.... storywise it was rather weak but plodded along. I would have been fuming if I'd gone to see this at the cinema, but feel it is worthy of a pre-owned DVD watching.

Watched this a couple of years ago, really enjoyed it. Actually felt sorry for the guy at the end, good film and worthy of a watch. I'd say 8.5/10.

I agree with Dave, saw this when it came out originally and would put it up there as solid 8/10, it was a great film. My favourite genre is gangster / crime and there's definitely a lot of shit films in the genre, this isn't one of them.

I am a rather tough critic not many films get 8 or above

Well I have to differ as I saw it on a big screen and really enjoyed it. It was an actual wolverine film and not the PG dross we have seen before. A couple of parts make you think herp derp but overall good and it is bloody, brutal and final. I was raised on 18 rated films rented on VHS though so modern marvels annoy me due to the watering down.
7/10.

Agreed, and viewed on the small screen.

Passengers on small screen 6/10. Above average with gorgeous visuals. The story is ok with the moral choice pretty horrific when thought about, I can't comment on the ending without giving away other then I wished they went the other way.
