Thought it would be shit

Starts off the same as the original

But then there is a bit of a twist

Not a bad film will watch again

Don't get the whole Star Wars thing. Not my cup of tea. Feels very scripted and unbelievable. They seem to just chuck in explosions and loud orchestral music to make up for it's boring storylines.

Hang on, you may be on to something here...

A fictional story feels scripted?
A story set in space, using currently impossible technology, is unbelievable?

Meta, man.

I mean the dialogue is very scripted in the way that you can feel they are reading lines, doesn't feel natural, and it's their acting skills that are unbelievable.

The same applies to every Star Wars film.

That's not to say that I'm defending them, just noting that they're all as bad. I enjoyed Episode IV when I was 5, but they've been toy adverts aimed at children from the get-go.

Agree... I just don't see the appeal. People fawn over them, don't get it.

If you didn't grow up with it then I can see why you wouldn't get it, but then I feel the same way about the Lord Of The Rings films, and I completely don't get that at all.

They're in the same category as Star Wars... long winded and boring. My wife hates me a little bit because I don't love those films.

For me Star Wars is the ultimate fantasy, the ultimate escapism. If I wanted to live in one of the worlds created in a movie then it would probably be there. Wizards, laser swords, faster than light travel, space battles... It's just awesome.

I'd be bored in LOTR universe.

It's definitely not 'proper' sci-fi. That's why I was so upset when they turned Star Trek into Star Wars, even though Into Darkness wasn't that bad.

The Comedian - 6.5/10

I don't have much to say about this one. I expected way more from the cast, but it was alright in the end. Robert De Niro is a once famous, aging comedian who struggles with living his life. If you like Niro, then you're gonna enjoy this film. Danny DeVito was present as well.

Logan - 7/10

As usual, the trailer is better than the film, but it does accurately capture what they tried to do.

I'm a real sucker for Requiem for a Mutant style wrap-up completion stories. Dark Knight Returns, Kingdom Come, The End(s), Cyrano de Bergerac, The Shootist, Unforgiven, right back to Beowulf.

This one... it's pretty decent. The explanation for Logan's condition is Elric level epic, well played.

I have to ding it for the unnecessarily sweary language, which I don't think adds much to it other than to clearly set it apart from the X-Men franchise.

Also, Hugh Jackman is a decent actor, but he's not great. Patrick Stewart brings some real pathos to his role. Jackman does his credit, but it's not going to get any grit in your eye. Richard E Grant, I am in his anti-fan club. Kid was well directed, Cary Elwes Jnr competent enough.

It's like a curry with all the right ingredients that comes out needing a few beers to complete it. Solid, but not sublime.

I found it hella scary. Watched the original American Pie last night, it's still a good film, it wasn't just 11yr old me that liked it Smile Made me feel old though, Tara Reid looked really sexy, compared to these days:

Alien: Covenant

Took the good lady to see this on Friday, after being impressed with the trailer. I loved the first two alien films, found the third hard going. The others haven't been good, and I haven't seen Prometheus.
Massive let down. I don't know if I had over-hyped it in my head (very fond memories of Alien / Aliens combined with a good trailer), but came out feeling that the had missed the atmosphere that the originals had. The fear of being stalked, the tension coming from the cinematography and the tight soundtrack. The actors were ok (Danny McBride was very good, and I usually hate the characters he plays). Where there were deaths, I found that the characters got over it quickly, partners, loved ones, friends were all forgotten in a matter of a few scenes. Fassbender was great though.
Overall, don't pay to watch this. Get it free or wait until it's available.
5/10

Oh, and

Easy A

Fancied watching something not too taxing last night, so we've got this on record on the Sky box. Retelling of the Scarlet Letter, Emma Stone, skimpy outfits. Yeah. 7/10 (EASY on the I)

The new one links in to Prometheus, apparently. Nothing I saw made me want to go and seek it out afterwards, however me banging on about how good the originals were means that the Mrs now wants to watch them...

IMO, the Aliens franchise was ruined by CGI. Having to hide the strings, so to speak, required the first two films to be very tightly shot, and that limitation forced the writing and editing to be more disciplined too.

Once you can film anything you like and add anything you like later, writers and directors will do exactly that, and you can kiss goodbye to the sense of claustrophobia. Bigger, bolder, brassier is not necessarily better.

Plus, humans are pretty good at telling when something is real-fake versus when it's fake-fake. You can't cross over that uncanny valley even in a UD-4L.

That's pretty much what I said to the Mrs. The first two were Horror / thriller films, and the atmosphere set that. The last film seemed more actiony with jumpy bits.

5/10

I have just got back from seeing it. 8/10 for me.

It had the mix of claustrophopic and epic huge sets that the first 2 alien films had.
Loads of little nods to the first three films, it did get a bit too biblical in places. The twist was good and not what I predicted.
I am a huge fan of the first three films and this one slots in as the 3rd best out of the now 5 in the franchise.

Fassbender is sublime, the lead female is no Ellen Ripley and the rest of the cast are quite forgettable and killed off at a rapid pace.

It made it all the more fun when the woman in the seat next to use jumped and screamed at the face hugger part! Though apparently there are only so many ways you can kill a xenomorph on a spaceship.

Made for a good evening and I would happily pay to watch it again on the big screen.
