I really enjoyed this collection of tales from the Old West by the Coen brothers.
A real mix of fortunes for the brilliantly acted characters with some absolutely stunning scenery.
A little gem on Netflix.

Yep, really enjoyed this, the Liam Neeson tale was the best imho.

My local cinema does classic film nights, so I took my dad to watch a film that we watched when I was a little kid. Mid 80's, awful soundtrack, abysmal acting, shameful script and it was loud enough to give me tinnitus for the rest of the night, but overall, it was brilliant. My dad hasn't been to the cinema since 1995, and he was walking around like a kid seeing new stuff. Prime Arnie, lots of guns and fighting, classic one-liners... 8/10 for the experience of seeing it in a cinema alone.

CBFcarl, remember when I said I was gonna kill you last? I lied.

Wink

You need to let off some steam.... Cool

Family film night last night, we went to watch:

Fantastic Beasts - The Crimes of Grindalwald

I'm not a Potterverse fan. The mrs and kid however are. I was meant to be taking the boy to watch Escape from New York in a 4k restoration, but the tickets had gone by the time I tried. Plan B, score some brownie points.... What a steaming pile of shite. Sure, in places it looked pretty (but dark...), but I (and more tellingly, the Mrs) had **NO** idea as to what was happening. There were some 1930's Germany-esque rally, there was CGI including one thing that looks like it was taken straight from The NeverEnding Story and had big teeth stuck to it, and that was about it. I know that it is building up to something, because this is film 2 of a proposed 5 film franchise, but come on - if someone from your target audience comes out not knowing wtf is going on, there is something wrong.

4/10 for me. Overly long and confusing bobbins.

Reviews seem to suggest so but my beef was more that it's a disjointed collection of short films, some of which were ok it just made no sense (to me) putting them together.

2001: A Space Odyssey Eh?/10 - I saw it as a kid years ago and thought it was a good sci-fi film with a weird ending*, hence the... Eh? Now I obviously have less of an attention span as I found it a rather boring sci-fi film, although I (surprisingly) remembered a lot of it so that's probably a factor. The cinematography is brilliant, if it wasn't for the all white cast (a collectors item now) and a few crude models/computer graphics, you wouldn't believe it's a 60s film.

*I still don't understand the ending Smile

Edit: I like the fact they realised it was really f'ing long so included an intermission Very Happy Marvel take note.

I had a sort of discussion with someone on a Facebook film group recently about this. He awarded it 5 out of 5 stars in a review, and I basically said that at the time it was released, yes but nowadays it doesn't hold up so well. It's a great experience, but it drags on so much, and whatever people say the ending actually means, it's still weird and still plods a bit. The guy got pretty shirty with me as if I'd insulted his mother or something.

The Predator (2018) - 5/10

It was alright, I guess. They took the sound effects and music from the original film/s, so that helped a bit. The comedy bits and jokes were actually good, but other than that it was nothing worth watching twice. The cast was the typical ''I can't find a job'' group of people, that did mediocre job, at best.

Kin 4.5/10 - Sci-fi thing where a young black guy in Detroit finds a well wicked space gun. It wasn't a bad film it just wasn't very original or memorable. Some good performances though.

Nothing But The Truth - 7/10

Kate Beckinsale as a reporter who faces a possible jail sentence for outing a CIA agent and refusing to reveal her source.

It might have been the Gin. But I was hooked. Good film.

Quiet Place 4/10 - beasts that hunt by sound have taken over, so eating a bag of McCoys can get you killed. Emily Blunt (rhymes with c...) tries to keep her family safe. Its not a great film, there was probably an underlying point about family bonds I completely missed.

Clovekitch Killer 3.5/10 - the son of a deeply Christian family thinks his dad might be a serial killer. So little happens I can't say anything more without ruining it. I liked the dads character but the rest of it was truly forgettable.

The Life of David Gale 8/10

Never heard of it before, girlfriend wanted to watch it.

Actually not bad. Story is about the death penalty in Texas and the extent to which people will go to protest or defend it. Sort of hard to explain much interesting without giving anything away. It's a detective/mystery film based on the moral issue of capital punishment.

Oh and the guy on death row is played by Kevin Spacey, convicted of raping and killing a woman.

So the film is about Kevin Spacey being a sex predator before he became a sex predator.

Quite good anyway.

The Outlaw King - 6/10

It was ok, no Braveheart though but then I was never that keen on that film either.
Chris Pine was reasonable, the accent wasn't bad but it was a good idea to limit his dialogue.
Another film where they make the most of the scenery which I always appreciate.
The battle scenes are ok but don't expect Braveheart levels of gore.

Gattaca - 6.5/10

Never really understood why this has such high ratings. First time I watched it it seemed dated and low budget. Seems the same now.

The premise is quite interesting I suppose, but I think it could have been bulked out a lot more in the time the film allowed.

Jude Law is ultra cardboard in the film too. Like a Hollyoaks actor. Makes one feel a bit cynical about how he got any other major roles after that.

Dead in a week or your money back

A young lad having a hard time of things, tries unsuccessfully to top himself but has no luck so hires a hitman to do the job for him; hence the name of the film. Lad's life takes a turn around BUT he's in contract to be killed, quite entertaining. Christopher Eccleston plays little more than a cameo role and Tom Wilkinson plays the hitman. Entertaining with a throw back to the 90's feeling about it. 7/10

Strangeways here we come

Plays in a Manchester tower block, locals kill off a loan shark then try to dispose of his body. I'd struggle to give it more than 4/10 as it obviously a low budget dreary poorly produced pile of cack. Michelle Keegan and that bird from trollied Chanel Cresswell make up the eye candy and the loan shark is played by Stephen Lord (Jay's dad from Eastenders) who also had a go at producing the film which is probably why it is cack. 4/10

Truth or Dare (2018) - 4.5/10

It is an idiotic horror film about young people playing this game. It starts quite like The Ring (2002), turned into crap soon enough after that. However, I kept watching, as it wasn't that bad, that I would turn it off and the cast was actually quite well picked.

One of those, lazy Sunday + crap weather films.

Swimming with Men (2018, UK) - 6/10

A very relaxed comedy about Rob Brydon going through a mid-life crisis, who finds a new meaning of life in synchronised swimming. It's sort of the ''typical'' from zero to hero film with some very well crafted comedy bits. Genuinely good film.

The Truman Show - 7.5/10

Probably quite groundbreaking at its time, but sadly I've seen enough Black Mirror to be almost saturated with philosophical questions like the one the Truman Show puts forward.

I spent more time wanting him to escape and 'discover' the real world, rather than just enjoying the fact that he was in an interesting reality TV show.

Not a bad film at all, but not life-changingly brilliant.

Bohemian Rhapsody - 9/10

Great film to watch in the cinema. Watched it last night and really enjoyed it. My only issue was it felt like they glossed over some of the parts that i'd like to know more about. Also would like to have heard more of the songs.

Worth a watch.

Yeah i've heard the actor is more like Freddie than the man himself!

I watched a few sci-fi's over the weekend.

Rampage (4/10) - based on the old Atari computer game which I remember, Gorilla etc goes mad. No real story

Jurassic Park Fallen Kingdom (5/10) - Dinosaurs, people get eaten. Meh

Darkest Minds (7/10) - Quite enjoyed this, virus wipes out nearly all the children in the world, apart from a few who have special powers, Telekinesis etc

UFO (8/10) - This was kind of good too, reminded me of university

Pacific Ring Uprising (6/10) - Ok-ish

I took the lad to watch Creed 2 last night.

I like watching boxing, but I've never seen a Rocky film all the way through, I was originally taking my dad to see it (he loves them), but he was ill, so just me and the boy. He wasn't expecting to like it, but came out having really enjoyed it. I thought it was a good story told well, although I thought that some of the scenes were shot too dark, or the lighting wasn't quite right. Gonna download the rest of the films and have a bit of a binge though. Solid 7.5/10

The mrs has just got an Amazon Prime account, so when I got in from work on Friday, she was watching Final Destination 5 again.

Not the best in the series (3,1,2 for me) but still a decent film. I felt that they tried too hard to integrate the 3D aspects which took you out of the film a little bit. Still worth a watch, but don't go out of your way to watch it. [SPOILER OF SORTS] I did like how they set the timeline so that it ended up at the beginning of FD1 - that was clever.

The Predator : 6.5/10

As someone else said, if it wasn't for the original music and some of the sound effects, this wouldn't have been as good. Was a bit cheese in parts but overall, it was quite an enjoyable film. There was several moments I laughed out light slightly, quite comedic in parts.

I found it quite funny as well, maybe a bit predictable, and the plot was a bit... Eh? 5/10 from me.

Venom 6.5/10 - a lot better and funnier than I was expecting. I do have a bit of a man crush on Tom Hardy, and I watched it with a pal so that probably helps with finding the humour funny, but overall I enjoyed it.

Red Sparrow 3/10 boring, laboring piece of shit... hang on Jennifer Lawrence's taking her clothes off 10/10 Thumbs Up A bit like Atomic Blonde, equality seems to mean watching an attractive women getting the crap beat out of her Neutral I thought violence against women was a problem, it seems strange they'd try and normalise it in cinema but whatever.
