Star Wars - The Force Awakens 6.5/10
I enjoyed it, but it was quite cheesy and it seemed to rehashing a lot of things that happened in the original films with lots missing between the end of Return of the Jedi and the start of this
Would have been much better if they'd tried to make an original film rather then churn out something for the sake of it to make money

The Spielberg version, with Tom Cruise.
A spur-of-the-moment decision to stay up and watch was nicely rewarded Smile

Actually, I often get bored with late night movies and give up before the end, but this had my attention throughout. With some suspenseful moments, I wanted to see what would happen next.

It made a change seeing Tom Cruise in non-hero mode too (American standard-format hero movies nearly always bore me).

The ending was a bit anti-climatical, but by then I was ready for bed anyway, so it worked out well watching it when I did.

Probably the only time I'll get to say the book was better with you well read mofos so... the book was better Smile

Tbh, I've never read the book (I don't think), but had a vague knowledge of the plot. I think this was kind of loose with that, because it was supposed to be set in a more recent time. So I didn't mind if it wasn't going to be an accurate interpretation of the H.G. Wells original, but just took it on its own merits.

A good book will always be better than a movie in my opinion Smile

For me, a movie is generally good if there are no moments that make me cringe in a "oh, don't be ridiculous!/yawn/not that old cookie!" kind of way Laughing

Yeah the thing with movies is that it is the director's interpretation of what he's read ... so if you've already read and made your own interpretation or built your own imagery around what you have read yourself, its never going to be as good - its just a simple case of the director's imagination vs your own.

Sorry, been catching up on the Bond movies I haven't gotten around to before, i.e., all the Daniel Craig ones - yes, really Rolling Eyes Not really worth rating them here, is it?

I don't think I've seen the whole of a single Daniel Craig one.
He just never really impressed me as having the right stuff.
I only really liked him in the 2012 Olympics clip Laughing

The Narnia films ruined the stories for me. I had read them all as a kid, read them to my kids and then to my grandkids and Hollywood turn out their crap versions. Evil or Very Mad

I liked Casino Royale. Skyfall was crap. I measure Xavier Bardem by "No Country For Old Men"; he failed sorely as the villain in Skyfall, and the ending was pathetic. Spectre was better, proper Bond-type script. Not just imo; fact Razz Take my word for it.

I've yet to see anything where he really impresses.
I didn't find him nearly as menacing as he was alleged to be.

I thought he was good in the movie I mentioned, which was the first I saw him in. I think I've seen him in a couple of other things, but agreed, nothing where he really stood out. But in Skyfall...just hopeless.

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. 8/10

Interactive film where you choose the outcome. A bit like the older Goosebumps 'reader beware, you choose the scare' thing, but it's not a childish horror story, it's a sci-fi psychological Black Mirror topic as one would expect.

Not a hugely exciting storyline, but very fun to feel slightly involved. Very cleverly made; it isn't possible to make a 'wrong' choice and cut the film time in half. Hard to really explain any of it. Fun to watch anyway.

A Netflix film (written by Charlie Brooker).

Goosebumps? Pffft...

Bandersnatch didn't really work for me, some of the choices weren't really choices, and even in the Netflix ending they allude to it being somewhat boring. Here's a good overview video of the different endings, which's actually better than trying them yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29ws5byaevo

Just watched The Saint c/o Netflix.
Really light-hearted, easy watching, quips and humour as the tv series. Worth a watch just for an escape for an hour or so. Enjoyable. 7.5/10

Bandersnatch was different... laughing out loud at some points (wont spoil it for others). I like new ideas so the interactive thing was good but what I hate is repetition so watching some stuff again was annoying (even though they tried to fast forward where possible). Looked on reddit afterwards and I'd gotten about 80% of the endings without 'cheating', but it had taken a few hours. So kinda dragged at the end really. Couldnt be arsed going back through and getting the rest.

Bird Box - to me its one of those you should watch before looking at reviews (ironic coming from a review really). I hadnt heard anything about it so just whacked it on - was a decent watch - although the plague/enemy and the ending were a bit lame. SPOILER ALERT the crazy guy in the house was a good scene

Saving Grace 8/10

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0195234/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2

6.9 on IMDB is rediculous.

My favourite film perhaps from 2000 (maybe Lock Stock, Human Traffic or Groove beat it from that era).

But one of a few films I've watched more than 6 times.

Warm and comfortable, with community + heart and a mild fuck you to establishment.

Let Me Make You a Martyr - 8/10

glad I watched it on my own though, I'd have to keep pausing it and rewinding it and explaining "film genres", analogy, metaphor and the like to my friends and family

Overall I really liked it, atmospheric, a bit of metaphysics and a lot of nihilism, but not in your face obvious like, I'm floundering for a deep south crime similarity Angel Heart maybe. That's a good film, but they drop more subtle clues in this than they did in that.

Ready Player one 3/10

I felt insulted afterwards. I have numerous problems with it. Pop culture references do not a movie make. "Oh let's cover the fact that this bit is boring or saturated with too much stuff by putting a DeLorean here!"

I found it to be cynical, disjointed, simplistic and saccharine. Like the Lego movie, but more condescending, and less aimed at kids. Kids aren't going to get the references and I, as an adult found it predictable. The emperor is indeed naked.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

The Wolf of Wall Street 7/10

Entertaining, quite funny for a Yank movie, DiCaprio was good, but some good supporting cast performances too. Very 80s theme, but I enjoyed it. A blessed relief from all the "terrorist bomber hijacks plane/White House/bus/spaceship/public toilet, and is defeated by all-American hero" bullshit drivel we're so often plagued with. Although this wasn't exactly original either, it is, I think, one of the better efforts.

N.B.: M.C won't like it Laughing
