Mary, Queen of Scots. 6/10

Now I love historical films. I love ACCURATE historical drama.

Sadly this fell down in a lot of ways.

Both Ronan and Robbie were good as Mary and Elizabeth but it didn't seem to get the story of their relationship out well.

A few historical sex and murder scenes and that was about it.

Also it basically finished when Mary went to England to ask Elizabeth for help so 19 years were qualified with a statement on screen saying Mary was caught plotting against Elizabeth and sentenced to death - cut to Lizzy signing the death warrant and Mary's execution.

It would be OK as a TV movie but a big budget, big screen? No.

Oh yes, I went with wifie to see this in the posh seats, she fell asleep. Laughing

From what I have read a good few chops to succeed with an axe was the norm in those days Shocked .

It's why Henry VIII brought the swordsman over from France to execute Anne Boleyn. He wasn't so squeamish by the time Catherine Howard got her haircut!

I think one of my favourites (not sure if it's true) was when Thomas Cromwell was executed.
Apparently his enemies got the executioner really badly rat-arsed the night before, purely so he'd make a right hash of it.

That's what you call vindictive. Not just satisfied with having the bloke executed..... Laughing

The Abyss - 8/10

Not quite as mystical and alien-y as I remembered, but still a good film.

Escape Room 2019. Yes you know the set up, random folks get to go to a random location and they all have something in common but they don't know that at the start. One by one the situations kill them off slowly whittling them down to 1.

3/4 of the film was superb. Last 1/4 totally totally changed direction it was a total WUT? moment. First 3/4 of the film 9/10, last 1/4 was 2/10 at most.

Shame.

He must have made good films to get the reputation and films he has done but I'm struggling to think of any.

Or an uncle already ridiculously famous in the business...

and an aunt from the same family
Adriaaaaaaan

I thought he was okay in Con Air.
Although I thought Steve Buscemi was menacingly better.

Nick Cage was gorgeous when he did Moonstruck with Cher (for which she won an Oscar, and wore that outrageous cobweb dress to the awards ceremony). I loved the whole film, it was really sweet and nutty-Italian. Seeing as how this is the relevant thread, I'd give Moonstruck an 8 out of 10.

Apparently with Cage you can tell how bad the films gonna be by the length of his hair Smile

Nicholas Cage did a couple of good films which made him famous / rich back in the day and he's been doing 200 films a year ever since because he's too famous (ha) to work in a normal job.

Bohemian Rhapsody - 7/10

Not bad, but clearly it's something aimed at Queen fans. No real story to it, just vague introductions to how each of their major hits were invented.

Left me with a sense of longing for what were surely much better days for British music. I'm not even a big fan of Queen, but at least the songs and lyrics had some depth to them.

A lot of historical dramas seem to do this these days. It hacks me off. i dont even know why they put sex scenes in any movies unless the subject is actuall sex , say a miovie like Sex Lies and videotape. Maybe im getting prudish in my old age.

I knew a guy who worked in the Groucho Club when Freddie Mercury used to frequent the place. Apparently Mercury was a complete C~nt.

he was good in Wild at Heart as well and Birdy. Lots of actors make crao movies but given how difficult it is to make a good one if someone is even in a ouple of good films then thats ok by me.

He came across as a bit of a cunt in the film too, so I guess they got that right.

Im sure hes just making a very nice living out of the movies he makes but I detest them. They're middle class desk jockey man fantasy material. Utter shite.

Mortal Engines

8/10

I really enjoyed it but then it ticked extra boxes to me. Visually spectacular and did manage to have some kind of story and Hugo Weaving doing what he is good at. being a bad guy!

Solid 6 out of 10 but an extra 2 points for steampunk goodness!

Manchester by the Sea
7/10

I thought this would be in England for some reason Confused
Very good acting and a deep film, but maybe not one for those with mental health problems.

Replicas
2/10

Atomic Blonde 7.5/10

Charlize Theron fighting. A lot. Pretty realistically too, as far as Hollywood movies go. Nice to look at, entertaining, plot a bit overly complex but not a bad movie. Better than I thought it would be.

Now that I did like.
A lot.
Awesome film.

Cage looking slick and moody. and the Elvis thing.
The viciously threatening cameraderie of Willem Dafoe ...
