Hi guys im running an amd athalon 1.4ghz atm Embarassed #

So im on about upgrading

ive seen a motherboard bundle for 139 quid

Processor
Cache 2MB
Clockspeed 2.0Ghz
Manufacturer AMD
No. of Cores 4
Description AMD Quad Core X4 9350e

Does this mean that with all 4 cores it equals 9350ghz?

So that would be 2.3ghz a core am i correct?

Im not quite sure ?
Confused

No 9350 is the name of the cpu.

It has a speed of 2ghz and 4 cores, means has 4 threads each running at a max of 2.0ghz.

The 2 Ghz cores will also include architecture that is much better than what your currently on. Processor performance isn't all about clock speed. Judging a CPU by clock speed alone is like judging the performance of a bike / car by how high the rev counter goes.

So a single task (well thread) like unzipping a file i would expect it to be about twice as fast. For multi tasking it is going to be up to 8 times as fast. e.g unzipping 2 files, running a browser with a few tabs open will take the same amount of time as unzipping just that 1 file as it will run all simultaneously on all the cores.

You will see a big improvement as well as your new motherboard will support faster RAM helping matters no end.

in short yes it will seem like lightening.
seems like a reasonable bundle to me. any chance of letting me know what the exact component spec for the bundle is.
don't forget that you may need to budget in RAM and maybe a graphics card/power supply depending on what you already have or what you are putting the system together with

what is this build going to be used for?

Hi full spec is here

https://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/motherboardbundles/Novatech/MBB-93502G.html

It comes with 2gb ddr2 ram as well and thats what i have in my comp at the mo so i can put the gig i have in mine onto that , i hope , to give me 3 gig

I will most likely need a new gfx card as at the mo i have a radeon x800pro , also i think ill need a new hard drive as mine are ide not sata

And i will just be using it for general internet stuff and playing WoW and CSS

As has already been said, the clockspeed is only one element so it's not the 'be all and end all'.

Performance increase due to multiple cores is also dependant upon how well the software is written to utilise those cores. Worst case scenario you could have three cores kicking back doing fuck all while one is running at 100%.

I like that analogy.

I had an old clapped out pc. Could turn it on in the morning and go put the kettle on. click to open a proggy, make the coffee, drink the coffee, have a shower, all before the proggy would open. It evetually died and now I have a shiny new pc with 3gig ram and a amd triple core processor.

Its fookin great! I can now surf the net on a webpage, play a dvd on the media player and download a torrent without slowing the pc down!

So in summary, the double/ triple/ quad core allows you to run more programs at the same time without compromising on performance.

Thats just being greedy! But I'll have a go!

You can.......Play a game
Download music
Watch a dvd
Browse the web
Create spreadsheets
Upload pics of your wife naked

all at the same time without slowing your computer down

but the chances are you will end up in hospital from your brain going into meltdown and dribbling out of your ears from trying to keep up!

That do? Razz

Truth is that the way people have written programs in the past has not taken full advantage of multi threading. It is also difficult for the operating system to anticipate which threads are going to be the most work load and distribute them evenly over the cores. My PC currently has 615 threads running on windows 7, but even if they are split over all 6 cores 99.9% of them are doing nothing. It's then probably that a couple that are doing the actual work are on the same core, and some other cores have a load of inactive threads on them.

I'm not saying Multi core isn't a good thing, just that operating systems and programmers have a way to go to get the best out of them. Buying a system with a shit load of cores like i did is just another attempt at future proofing. Much like everybody buying a 64bit system as 32bit is dead right? Laughing

You can manually assign processes to particular cores if you want to using the Affinity option.

A mate with an I7 claimed to have 8 processors, i told him to stop talking bollocks. I even looked it up to prove him wrong. However now i can see exactly why he thinks he's got 8!

Quote:
Core i7, featuring 6 cores, 32 nm process, Hyper-Threading (for a total of 12 logical threads)

So intels hyper threading just splits each core into 2 logical thread handlers. That will be why your system looks to have every other cpu under load.

I thought the Xtreme i7's did have 8 cores, they are about £700 though.

Nay, the Core i7 980X has 6 and is the only I7 to do so. Most of the others as quads & duals.

That doesn't mean they're the same...

It's like saying my car's got a W24 engine. Well, it's a V12 actually, but it's as close as you're going to get in a road car.

I wish they were all quads! A laptop has been ordered for me, but it's been spec'd out by somebody else. He picked the 'fastest' processor to go in it, which he did based on clock speed so i'm getting a i7 620m dual core Confused To spend the whole budget he spent the rest of the money on 8GB of RAM. Oh yes and he picked the smallest screen resolution he could. Could he not have just asked me?! Bah!

seems your right, i just put in core i7 on the intel site and that was what it brought up for me. Embarassed
