How many monkeys would it take to scrap a transit van using only rolls...

I'm joking! Ok, it was shit but never mind.

I need to scrap two vehicles. A transit van, no MOT on it and no hope of attaining one and a VW polo decent length of MOT but its got a fueling problem I can't identify (its bogging down when revving, probable [although not impossible@Hetzer] fuel pump issues. Wink )

Anyway the van is fucked and since both vehicles got their windows tanned in over the weekend the car is essentially a write off too.

My question is, is it a scrap metal dealer or a scrap car dealer I'd go to, do they have a residual value and if so where is best to realise it. Although the car is mine, the money for both is going to the Local Scout group (who ran the van) so I'm not being tight.

Thanks in advance.

Thumbs Up

Hi

Needs to be a licenced recycler for cars. The log books need to go to the DVLA with the box filled in for them being scrapped, and the DVLA will only accept that now from a licenced recycling facility. If you send it in they will now, as of a few weeks ago, just send it back and refuse to accept it.

All the best

Keith

Scrap metal is good money at the moment

You'll see 120ish for a car (round here anyway) and possibly more for the van.

Have a ring around a few local scrappies and see who'll offer you the most, it needs to be a licensed car place.

Cool.

I was confused by an ad I saw on gumtree, a company in Glasgow making a big deal about how they were 'licensed' to dispose of cars and would be happy (like they were doing you a big favour) to scrap your car free of charge, no mention of scrap value. The ad has since disappeared.

I have a couple of numbers to try.

Thanks again.

Thumbs Up

Fill the fuel tank with sand, and soak the seats with water before they get weighed in......every little helps!

Did not know that, but fail to see what they can do if for example, you cut the van up with a 9 inch grinder, and take it to a scrappy to weigh it in.

Retain the chassis/engine numbers or grind them off.

Then inform the DVLA you have scrapped it. It's not like the car/van will ever pick up a ticket or be involved in a drive by, so there is nothing that can come to you.

It will just be in a loop of eternal non existence, only exists on a computer system. Seems slightly narrow minded of the DVLA, not that we should be surprised at that.

Just wondering, because I scrapped a van a while back, but never got a confirmation from the DVLA as is usual, the guy who scrapped it, didnt have a clue about the V5 process, he just wrote scrapped all over the V5 in capital letter, probably stuffed it in the glovebox Laughing

I sent off my bit, and I have no doubt that he never sent off his. But the van has been gone for years, and i've heard nothing.

To the OP, Unless you find an enthusiast for the particular vehicle then scrapping is by far the quickest and most hassle free way, but it's the least amount of value. Though scrap prices are a lot healthier than they have been.

Was down to £50-60 a tonne a bit of a while back.

Another thought, Mr Broon, is the Transit a 85-2000 model?

Does the alternator work? I need one. Smile

Will pay, obviously.

PM if you could help Thumbs Up

If you're not in a hurry, why not try to sell the car on a free ads site or whatever? It won't cost you anything and you never know, it does have an MOT someone may buy it eventually, even just for parts.

Put it this way, on a long enough timescale, anything is possible Wink

They just expect you to keep sending in SORN notices or to tax it every year, and fining you whenever you forget.

If you have broken up the vehicle yourself, you must either continue to tax it or tell the DVLA that you are keeping it off the public road. You can do this by making a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification). You will need to make a SORN every year until you have taken it to an ATF, or told DVLA that you longer have it.

There is a bit on the DVLA web site and it seems related to the new V5 documents, although found something a few weeks ago which seemed to suggest that even the old log books wwhich had a space for it being scrapped would be rejected. Did find this blog from some councilor who seems to think it is a good idea.

Suspect all that most people will do is just send it off as sold with some random name and address.

All the best

Keith

This was what I was thinking.

Selling it to a scrap dealer, they just weigh it and off it goes to be crushed. But what about scrap yards or for spares or repairs.

I would say though and it was quite nippy, with the VW polo I've tried to get bits for it from the scrappy but its been usless because the same bits go all the time and the scrap cars usually have the bits missing anyway.

Passenger side electric window motor for example. Like hens teeth so they are, the chances of finding a decent example is infinitely high... (But presumably not impossible.) The one I did eventually get lasted fortnight then conked out.

I would remove the alternator for you goose, but you're aways away, not sure how you'd be able to get you hands on it.

Thumbs Up

To avoid the return of log book from DVLA refusing to accept you've scrapped it just tear off the yellow bit, fill it in with imaginary scrap/car dealer details and send it off.
Job done. Thumbs Up

Completely forgot about SORN there for a minute, no idea why.

Pretty low down trick in that case in the hope to maximise opportunity for taking fines. Thumbs Down

You think they might be learning what is best for any easy life, with these court cases going through against them and such, but apparently they aren't.

Check the cat or exhaust boxes haven't collapsed internally and are strangling the engine. (That is, take the exhaust off the downpipes (or manifold if the cat's that high up the system) and try running it then - worked for a Civic we had).

When you take a vehicle into a scrap yard, they should raise a certificate of destruction for you, thus removing the need to send in the V5, which is what we do at the company I work for.

When the vehicle is brought in, it is taken to the ELV shed where all hazardous waste materials are removed, as well as the higher value materials, Cat's, alloy wheels etc.

Registration, VIN's etc are recorded as the vehicle passes through the ELV shed, these are then handed back to the office where we then log the vehicle as destroyed directly with the DVLA via a website.

We often will produce C.O.D's on weighing in the vehicle, or if it's not possible will post them the next day.

If you can obtain the C.O.D from the Scrappy you're using then this will cover you if the DVLA start asking questions, although in my experience once the C.O.D is raised that is that.
