Don't know if this is the right place but I have been recently reading ride reports on here and on advrider and some of the photos are when the rider is on the bike and took photos of fellow riders etc.

I decided I want to get a digital camera to be able to take with me on trips and to have the ability to do this. Anyone got any preferences of camera. I take it must be small and easy to use?

Cheers

My wife has a panasonic lumix (TZ5) I'm very impressed with the photos from it. I can stand for ages playing with £2000 worth of kit she stands there and snaps away and gets good photos. Alright in low light too.

I would definitely recommend the Fujifilm FinePix S2500HD.

Available form Amazon for £140 and Tescos for £125.

Brilliant all round camera.

I used a Pansonic LX3. I like the 24mm (equivelent) wide angle which both gives a nice aspect and means you don't have to be quite so accurate where you're pointing it.

I had this mounted on a quick release plate on my bars.
I had it in a waterproof wallet style thing (with lens space).
I used a couple of those key chain recoil things, so that worst case if it fell of or I had to let go (to use the clutch, say) it'd just hang there.
You can see the mount by my left mirror here:
https://gees.zenfolio.com/img/s5/v4/p580918899.jpg

In my ideal world, I would have that camera, but...
With a grip that had a trigger and a 'release from mount' button.
A mount that the camera could just be dropped in - thinking a widish pin with a rubberised orifice and err, best probably stop there before the dirtier minds get excited!
A retractable cord going through said orifice that also delivers power so the camera could be left on.

I kept a charger in a pannier and had two batteries so I could swap over when one ran out. I found it easier to leave the camera on so I could just grab it and take a pic as needed.

My other half swears by her canon AS1000S, not a current model but still available new from discount places for less than a 100 quid.

Particulary for touring in the summer it has one great thing that is missing from many cameras now... a viewfinder. Great for low light and as a glasses wearer she says she has no worries with glare from the screen composing a shot in strong sunlight.

Takes some really great pics and runs for a week on two AA batteries, an important consideration touring.

I took my Canon G9 away with me to the Stella and eneded up trying to find places to recharge the batteries as I couldn't find a car charger for it before I went... actually still don't have one so if anyone can point me in the right direction Very Happy

You should be able to get chargers on ebay.

I got a universal one and adaptor plate for my LX3 which runs from 12v so I could charge it while the bike was running.

Nope - never seen one so far I would trust on there - only company I have seen on Evil Bay is selling hooky Canon copies from Hong Kong - tried one of theirs last year and it fried a new battery.

Some are okay , got a HK charger for my video camera batteries, but given the expense of the pukka Canon batteries which charged last a lot longer than the copies , don't want to risk another experiment Wink

I don't know if this is what you're after or not, but, on my last couple of European adventures I have used and Aldi Waterproof Sports camera.

The beauty of it is, you can hang it round your neck whilst you're riding, irrespective of the weather, and because it has nice big buttons, you can take pictures on the move. Now I have always just held it up pointed and pressed, I am not taking my eyes off the road to look through the viewfinder and I have had some half decent results.

Check out the threads in my sig box, all of the road shots were taken whilst riding and holding up my Aldi (Bonco-Special) Underwater Sports Camera, not bad for 50 bangers!

What about on bike video? I use the Archos 604 with extended battery , a waterproof camera etc.. it has a remote switch with a small red led shows me I am recording.. Its chunky kit, you would need to be able to put it on the bike or in a bag. various ways of fitting it to the bike.

On a slightly different tangent, I like using my iPhone 4 for snaps while on holiday. The camera is good, very good for a phone, but not quite up to dedicated camera levels but it is very close. But it has a big plus side of GPS tagging the photos so that I can see on a map where each photo is taken which is useful when you have lots and lots of photos.

I like my Fuji cameras. Reliable, tough, good images and good battery life.

Take a look at https://secure.fujifilm.co.uk/shop/consumer/digital/digital-cameras/view-all

Genuine Fuji refurbs with all the bits and the same warranty as new. Very good prices. If you search the 'net you can usually find vouchers for a percentage off or free postage as well.

Remember if you've got your camera time set properly, you can always just match it to your GPS route if you're using one (I believe you get programs that do that).
Quite a few 'proper' cameras now have a GPS built in.

I do like the look of the Panasonic TZ10 - it has a 25mm (equivalent) wide angle and 12x zoom on top of that as well as GPS built in. However image quality isn't quite as good as the LX3/LX5 and the lens starts at F3.3 rather than F2.

I would look at this review of the Panasonic GF-1

Well my missus has got a TZ10 and I'd recommend it...bloody sight easier to get a snap than my 7D with all its associated gubbins, and the results are bloody good too.

If you want something a bit bigger, then look for a Sony R1; You'll never get images as sharp as these on any camera under a couple of grand! Had one for a couple of years, sold it to buy a 450D, and still can't get the same quality with my 7D and decent lenses Mad They don't make them any more, but you should be able to find one 2nd hand...
