Posted: 13:49 - 02 Sep 2010 Post subject: ZX6R Cutting out with clutch in intermittantly |
 |
|
Yesterday i was coming back after a long ride down to bournemouth with the girlfriend on the back, and a few times i felt the throttle response to be slightly sluggish (think how a bike acts when its running out of petrol, and about 10% of that)
Pulled in the clutch while going along and it just died instantly, coasted to a stop, would start again on the button barely even doing a full revolution, then idle normally. Would be fine for another 20 miles or so, then i would test it and same thing.
It was not low on petrol, i tried with fuel knob on ON and Reserve, no change. No overheating, and the engine was certainly warm.
What are the common culprits for this kind of cut out. It never died while moving, and even when sluggish i could still open it up and the bike would oblige, just when i pulled in the clutch and let it coast straight out rather than sitting at idle.
I assume the idle speed is okay as i have not been messing with it and other that these little incidents it idles okay once warm.
As this is a new issue i have never had before, it has cropped up the day after i had my (pretty knackered) chain tightened up, i cant see how an overly tight chain (not that i think it is) would cause the engine to cut out while coasting?, but i figure give you guys all the info.
In that vein months back i took off the tank and changed the plugs and cleaned the airfilter if i routed the pipes/breather badly when i put it back on could this be it? i doubt so considering it has only occured now.
Could it just be a case of needing new plugs and a general service, or does this smack you of something more serious?
EDIT: just do add its not doing it today with just me on the bike..

Did it start doing it immediately after you'd had the tank off?
If so then it's probably a kinked hose somewhere.... ____________________ My Flickr |

Nope, Had the tank off months ago, only started doing it yesterday, i doubt it is a pinched hose due to the length of time between the two... ____________________ [Current Bikes - GSXR-750 K5 & C90-97 ] [Previous Bikes: Runner 125, YBR 125, GS500, Bandit 600, Hornet 600, ZX6R-99, C90-99, R1-99, XT600E-04, GSXR-750 K4, CRF250L '16] |

Will do ASAP, Its blatantly been 4-6k miles since i did them.
I hope it is just it grumbling at me for failing to maintain rather that something more sinister.
If anyone could do a little list of what could cause an engine to cut out in these circumstances and then restart immediately it would be appreciated. ____________________ [Current Bikes - GSXR-750 K5 & C90-97 ] [Previous Bikes: Runner 125, YBR 125, GS500, Bandit 600, Hornet 600, ZX6R-99, C90-99, R1-99, XT600E-04, GSXR-750 K4, CRF250L '16] |

I had a similar problem after changing the plugs.
One of the stick coils had a loose metal clip around it that i presume is an insulator.
As the bike warmed up it would drop onto 3 cylinders now and again and have the feeling of it running out of fuel but it would still respond ok to throttle input. ____________________ Suzuki GT250 x7------- Fazer 600------CB250RS------Aprilia Rally 70----- Bandit 600
