What do you lot do if you are leaving your bike parked up somewhere with all your luggage (tent, sleeping bag etc) still on the bike?

Take it all with you (could be difficult) or just the important stuff? Trust and hope that nobody pinches anything?

My Dad has one of these.... and then uses locking metal panniers.

But I guess it depends on how long you plan to leave you bike somewhere? On a campsite I have no worries about leave all my stuff in my tent... but then again I haven't ever been on 'dodgy' campsites.

At service stations I have left stuff on the back of bike for 30mins or so while I get lunch and have a break.

My panniers are lockable, and a padlock and cable around my tent. I also lock my lid to the tent/rack. I then leave the bike hoping that nobody nicks anything. I dont have anything of value that anyone would want, but you have to take risks to get around.
At the campsite I lock everthing away into the panniers and sleep with my money/credit cards.

The problem with the PacSafe nets is that on a bike the steel wire net rubs agains the bike and can do alot of damage over time.

There isn't an outside net on the PacSafe tank bag I linked to. I have used it on my Hornet a couple of times, it totally fills the tank out and also interferes with the bars as they turn to full lock.

I thought they looked a good idea, but after your post (and thinking about it) I'd agree, it wouldn't be so good. Maybe sandwich the mesh with another bag them if you want to use them

I usually don't go too far away from my loaded bike. But if I'm at a rally site, then I chat to and make friends with the people camped around me, you will generally find bikers are respectful and will often keep an eye out. In saying that, although I wouldn't want my camping stuff to get nicked...it's all stuff that can be replaced.

All valuables are kept on my person.

Hmm. No lockable panniers on the TZR.

I'd be taking a rucksack with clothes in and tent on top, then a roll mat, pillow and sleeping bag bungeed to my pillion seat. Possibly a tank bag but if I'm only staying over for one night (which is the plan) it won't be needed.

The plan is to ride to Abersoch in North Wales and stop at Portmeirion for an hour or two on the way. Don't really want to have to lug all my gear around with me.

I did think about taking some tie down straps and feeding them around my sleeping bag, roll mat and pillow and then under my seat so if anyone did want to take anything, they'd have to cut the strap.

That way I'd only have to carry my rucksack which isn't too bad. I'd be sick if someone stole all my bedding though as I'd like a decent nights kip

Has anyone ever had any luggage nicked off their bike? What were the circumstances?

I must admit, it worries me and I'm always paranoid about it but I have never had anything nicked while at service stations and the like (touch wood) but rarely leave the bike without a look for more than 15 mins. That said it'd only take a minute to cut straps and grab the bag - I always keep valuables on me though (sat nav / cards etc).

Looking for more replies guys, as I am going away this summer and this issue has been this issue of my most concern when planning the trip. Obviously I want to see as much of the places I am going to visit, but it will be physically impossible to take a tank bag, (1 pannier bag), and a tent, sleeping mats, etc with us when we leave the bike.

I would ideally like to leave stuff with the bike (both pannier bags and the tent if possible) and only take the tank bag (with the important stuff in it) with me.

I bought some small luggage padlocks the other day for the pannier bags, but it would be very easy for someone just to take the whole bags off the bike if they really wanted.

Anyone else had any problems with stuff being taken before ?

a mate of mine takes all his valuables with him and leaves a note in his mesh straps saying that the owner has taken everything of value with him.
that seems to deter scrotes from rifling through his stuff.

I would,nt worry too much just keep things that you just "cant" loose hidden or under lock/key in a topbox etc, outside of europe scrots and tea leafs are few and far between.

I left a 2005 Honda XR650R parked down a side road in st.petersburg for 4 days with only a cheap disc lock on and soft luggage near to were people were regualy going through the bins looking for food and nothing was taken.

I have only had one thing nicked from my bike in all my years of traveling and riding.

It was on top of the Col du Mont Cenis, in the first cafe car park and I was being a good Samaritan and had stopped to fix a puncture for a French biker.

I had taken the brand new only worn that week for the high trails Oakley MX goggles that sat on the top of the left hand tank pannier out to get at the repair kit and left them on my seat. I was sat on the floor next to my bike while fixing the puncture and a coach full of Italian kids pulled up. They of course made a beeline for us too see what was happening and when we had shooed them off - my feckin' goggles had gone little feckers had just swiped them of the seat literally inches above my head.

But so far touch wood, that is it. I usually keep anything of value in a locked pannier/top box or in my tank bag which I carry round with me. generally out of site is out of mind when it comes to stealing kit off bikes . If they can see it they get tempted.

I've got a new plan of action now. Found a camp site in Porthmadog which is just next to Portmeirion. I'll go there, pitch my tent, dump my stuff, visit Portmeirion, then ride on to Abersoch before returning back to base. On the way home, I'll visit mount Snowdon.

Get two stickers, one for each pannier and write on one " Used Sanitary Towels " and " Shitty Underwear " on the other...

You just better hope no one puts theirs in there though...

Tho only things of value are my money/cards, satnav and camera.
Anything else would be of nusance if taken and totally worthless.
If left by the road the chances are that the bike would be stolen rater than getting into panniers/bags to nick your dirty shreddies and shirts.

Theres some right bag head fuckers about, robbed the large metal waterbowell i gave the local park .. cunts ... gonna rig one up with a chain and weatherproof padlock ....

For me take your valuables and a tankbag that acts as a rucksack ...
