I've just took the carb off my bike to clean it out, I don't have any brake fluid with me, what else (that is as effective) could I use?

Brake fluid?! Don't you mean brake cleaner? The 2 are very VERY different and should never be confused! Razz

Redex and a toothbrush works well, as does lighter fluid and petrol. Whatever you use needs to evaporate and be flamable, everything else is just a case of scrubbing.

It's called carb cleaner for a reason, it is for cleaning carbs.
