New to the forum as of today, here are my bikes:

'95 FZR 600R - My road, bike so far I've stuck a Nitron shock in there, next up is the brakes.

'84 GPZ 750 - Eventually this will be a track bike, so far I've chopped the tail and got it to run... sort of. I'm never going to buy a bike without first hearing it run again. Ever.

Silly question why the GPZ as a track bike? It is not exactly the most sporty of bikes.

Why the GPZ as a track bike?

For a laugh mainly, should be ready to go in about £700, plus the lack of fairings means it won't be as expensive to repair when I drop it, whereas if I dropped the FZR I'd be wounded.

I do have a few concerns about it, the spindly forks being one, they're only 37mm diameter so the flex should be interesting.

The brakes could well turn out to be shit, I'm used to four pot calipers and twin 296mm discs now, so twin 240mm and twin pot calipers may end up with me going off road.

But there's always the possibility of upgrades, I've seen Bandit 1200 front ends on these and wider rears. Stocks are 110/90-18 and 130/80-18. So traction could also be an issue but honestly don't think I'm fast enough to really worry about that yet.

As for the power side of things, I'm currently studying motorcycle engineering so I'm sure I'll learn something useful eventually.

So yeah, mainly for the giggles, and also to see if I can do it.

Its a laugh.

£700 will buy quite a lot of race / track bike. They typically cost less than road bikes as less people want them and they are less useful. Taking something road legal and making it track only is the expensive way to do things.

True, but most of that budget is just replacing service items which are going to need doing on any bike I get at some point. £200 is just the tyres, another £200 for discs and pads, the rest goes on a new seat, oil change, levers, blah blah blah. I've got a spreadsheet with what I need on it.

Plus building the bike gives me something to do.

Couldn't you buy another FZR for that kind of money, (£700ish)?

EDIT: it would appear so -

Yeah he could buy another FZR, buts Its not going to be half as fun lapping someone on a FZR than it is lapping them on an 80s GPZ750 with the forks flexing away as you roll on the power mid corner.

Cool Thumbs Up

Top work dude, nice to see 80s sportsbikes still getting tracked, most of them get undeservedly used as winter hacks.

Cheers
John
