I got the normal update email from focussed events and noticed that they are introducing timing transponders to sort the groups out, and ditching the novice/inters/fast grouping system.
Not sure if its a good or a bad thing really.

Quote:
We have just got back from Le Mans where we have trialled transponders for the first time. Overwhelmingly the feedback has been really positive. So much so that all our European events will now feature transponders and smarter group sessions.

Timing Transponders - How it works:

A small rechargeable transponders is easily fitted to your bike and works in conjunction with our timing system at the track and at the start/finish line.
Every time you ride past the timing point on the start/finish line, your individually coded transponder sends a signal to a detector on the track and our system records your lap time and lap counts.
This provides accurate and reliable lap times which we then use to assemble the groups.

Coming to the UK soon!

Group names Novice, Intermediate and Experienced will be finished, being replaced by group names simply called 1,2 and 3 and your group will be based on 'your level' within that event.

Giving much better quality tracktime and it will be safer

It's a brilliant thing.

Hottrax used to do it, it meant you went out with people of a similar speed to you and didn't end up spending half the session stuck behind someone so less risky overtakes.

Hi

This is how ESS ran its pace days. Other than delays sorting out the groups between sessions (could be sorted with a bit more practice) it worked well. They DID NOT give you the times on the day.

All the best

The BMF have been using them in the moped endurance race for years. The number of times we took our transponder home by accident and had to post it back to them.

I hear ya.

I just got back from Brands. I'm not the quickest rider and was in novice group. There were so many quick riders in it and must of been getting impatient the amount of risky overtakes they were doing. I was mid corner on sertees when I got undertaken only for him to go straight causing me to brake and follow.

So I think it will be good, 1 2 & 3 so you don't get a mixture.

one think that would annoy me about it is the amount of time its going to take to sort out 90 riders and their groups.

i dont want to loose an hour of my tracktime whilst they try to find 'so and so on a black gixxer' to move their group.

i get the idea and i agree with the positive outcomes but at long as it doesnt impact the time i've paid for.

ESS gave everyone numbers and the groupings were posted on a board in pitlane - it didn't take long to sort out and would no doubt have got more efficient the more they did it.

Sounds good - but surely makes the 'first' session all that more dangerous, if theres a mix of talent too - the amount of people that will want to be in fast and thus will be out competing for a place?

thats true tho mix of talent wont be any different, people will still book the group they think they should be in but they will probably be pushing a little too much too soon to try and ensure their place in the higher groups. im sure there'll be a few who will go brain out just so they can say 'i was picked for the fast group'

could be interesting
