The Million Dollar Homepage is a website conceived in 2005 by Alex Tew, a student from Wiltshire, England, to raise money for his university education. The home page consists of a million pixels arranged in a 1000 × 1000 pixel grid; the image-based links on it were sold for $1 per pixel in 10 × 10 blocks

So he set up a web page where people could post spam, and the. Charged for it?

Great that it worked for him, fuck knows why it did though....

Depends how you look at it, i see spam as irrelevant shit that gets shoved down your throat whether you like it or not.

This i see as simple (maybe overwhelming) advertising, it's not in your face (at least until he didn't appear on T.V) & it works, plenty of the big buyers have probably had quite a few customers as nothing is forced on you, people visit the website knowing full well what it's for.

Imagine if it had pop ups. Razz

It was a great gimmick at the time, I remember it being reported as a great novelty item.

Beyond that, its not a repeatable thing. (I wouldn't have thought anyway.)

Thumbs Up

They were sold in 10x10 blocks, i.e. 100 pixels = $100 dollars to be part of some horsecrappy spam haven.

There was a good market in selling one-click install OneMillionDollarHomepage scripts though. Laughing

Why wouldn't they?

Most of the big ones look like spam sites anyway. I know the casino's definitely are.

Beats paying a Nigerian/Chinese guy to post spam on random forums I suppose.

The guy got a really good job out of that site. What happened was that he posted it everywhere, a few bored people bought a pixel or 2. Then when he continued to tell people about it and they saw pixels had been bought the clever ones realised this might become a big thing and bought pixels so that once it was famous they would have been a part of it. National press and TV picked up on it and companies started buying advertising space on it so every time it was mentioned their logo got shown. There was then a mad race to get a pixel before the whole thing was full.

The end result is that at no significant expense to anyone, the guy became a millionaire. In many ways it was a groundbreaker for many of the current online sites methods of making huge amounts of money.

Indeed, and the fact that your ad is guaranteed to be seen more there then on a random forum. I'm guessing it got a huge amount of traffic when it was still selling the ad space.

Who actually clicks these links anyway? Laughing One of the largest ads on that website is for a loan, who in their right mind would ever click a dodgy link to some unknown website when they can Google for peace of mind & get a legit website? That goes for any ad.

Interesting. I understand fully why big company's would advertise & even casino but not for the websites that have no name & are just advertising 'click here to become rich' for example.
