Are there any IAM (Institute Advanced Motorists) out there? If so, if you pass the test which gets you a possible discount on insurance, does this also apply for your car insurance or would you have to pass the car version AND the bike version to get both or do they accept that it is the same motorist or do they go with "They are different driving styles?"

Thanks all

Don't get a massive difference, but I expect you could legitatemtely say "yes, I have passed the IAM test". In some cases, the question is worded "are you a member of the IAM", which you can presumably answer yes to regardless of whether or not you have passed the test, presuming your fees are paid up!

The car and bike tests are seperate so you would have to do the bike one to get discount on bike insurance etc.

I did my car one and it made naf all difference to my insurance and the ones the IAM advertise as cheaper arn't Thumbs Up

I did the bike test and found that both insurance for the car and the bike came down. Not by loads, but enough. I also found that their own insurance (IAM Surety) became mega cheap for the car but not so for the bike.

I tried using my car IAM to insure my bike but IAM Surety wouldn't have it.

I save shedloads on my car policy every year though, it was well worth doing.

It might be helpful if you chaps could post your ages, how long you've had a license and your no claims bonus.

I'd expect advanced qualifications to make a bigger difference for higher risk drivers / riders, and the benefit to tail off with age and experience, but then again that would be expecting something sensible from insurers. Rolling Eyes

22, 2ncb (coming up 3). Did the car test when I was 19 to be informed I couldn't use IAM Surety until I was 21. So far they've not been the cheapest for me and more often than not the can't beat the insurance quotes I have given them. Basically made sweet fa difference for me.

26, passed my car test 9 years ago, coming up for 7 years NCB. Passed my IAM when I was 20.

Admiral group used to give me large discounts for my IAM, and now I insure with IAM Surety who will beat everyone else every year, and chuck in free protected no claims, free business use, etc.
