I always thought Jumping spiders lived in Asia and Africa, however after some further re-search is seems I found a real jumping spider at work.

I was in the back corridor at work, walking towards the shop floor when a little blur appeared in front of my eyes, it took a moment for my eyes to focus, I realised it was a spider, I am a fan of spiders so I watched it for a few moments but it didn't seem to be moving, which I thought was odd considering it had literally just dropped down.
I pinched the web about 3 inches above the spider and it started to move, so I popped it on a box, fully expecting it to scurry away behind the box. But Mr Spider turned and faced me, which I thought was kind of odd.
I made a triangle around the spider with my fingers, and it crawled up onto my hand, it was only tiny, maybe 5mm long at the very most. I let it crawl up my hand and onto my sleeve, I put my other hand in front of it and it walked up onto my other hand.
Every other spider tries to run the second you pick it up, so I found this one really interesting and entertaining. My friend/colleague came out to the corridor so I showed him the spider, As we were looking at it, it hopped about 4 inches across my hand, 10 times it's own length!
We were pretty amazed by this as neither of us have ever seen a spider jump before, let alone such a comparatively huge distance!

I popped it on the floor, and with a little guidance (read poking) from the pair of us we ushered it to safety under a door so that none of the other staff would squish it. I went back out onto the shop floor for about 5 minutes, when I returned to the stockroom I found my spider friend sitting on top of a box again, pretty certain it was the same one. As I was looking at it, again it turned to face me! I picked it up again, this time it jumped a few times acrosss my hands before jumping off and back onto the box again.
Our eyes hadn't lied the first time, it had definitely jumped.

Anyway, I googled "Jumping Spider" and this is what Wiki says:

Quote:
Jumping spiders are known for their curiosity. If approached by a human hand, instead of scuttling away to safety as most spiders do, the jumping spider will usually leap and turn to face the hand. Further approach may result in the spider jumping backwards while still eyeing the hand. The tiny creature will even raise its forelimbs and hold its ground. It may even jump on the hand. Because of this contrast to other arachnids, the jumping spider is regarded as inquisitive as it is seemingly interested in whatever approaches it.

It matches perfectly with what I observed.

I thought it was pretty cool.

Hope I haven't bored you.

we got from south america and the far east inc scorpions and even the odd snake or other wierd insect
most were killed and identified later much to the annoyance of the local zoo

To be honest I with the size of this thing I don't think it could have hurt me if it had wanted to.

I really loved how it was so inquisitive though, I want one as a pet Sad

(Would probably end a bit like this Laughing )

Was this little spider marked like a zebra? They're pretty common, I've seen hundreds of them. They're the only spider I like, too small to bite and cute as a button. I didn't know they did webs though (if it was the zebra type), I've only ever seen them running free on walls and stuff. They get their prey by jumping on it apparently, not by catching it in a web.

Sadly any spiders in this house either get evicted by me or mr dyson comes and gets them since the GF is petrified of the poor little things.

Alright you guys with more knowledge than I, can any of you tell me what the hell is living in my bedroom? Very Happy

I'm alright with spiders generally, the only ones I ever see are tiny web spinners that I don't mind putting outside when friends or family throw a hissy fit 'cos they're scared of them.

BUT.

The past couple of days I've noticed about 4 at any one time, huge spiders, in my room, on my bed, drawers, top of my fish tank etc. They're a good 2 inches in diameter including legs. And they don't seem to be web spinners. They freak me the hell out cos they're so big. They have something protruding from the front of them, looks like a mouth or something (feelers?).

Any help appreciated, dunno what the hell they are but they're big Shocked Laughing

Cheers,

Steve.

Sounds like a "Common House Spider" google it for pictures.

They get eaten by the type in my first post in this thread which I find quite amusing considering the size difference.

Also yes it was the stripy one. They use a web as a safety line when the jump apperently, so I can only assume that it was hanging down because it messed up somewhere above me Laughing

This time of year the spiders around here are big enough to let themselves in using the door handles! I found this one sat on the headboard of my bed last week just as I was about to toodle off to bed. Suffice is to say I didn't go for the introductions and inquisitive stuff, as I didn't want it scuttling behind the headboard out of reach. It was swiftly apprehended and sent packing and I even heard a distinct thud as it landed on the decking!! Shocked

I'm particularly fond of the bigger scarier shadow!! Mr. Green

Say hello Mr. Green

I'm not sure anyone who is afraid of spiders would last more than a few nanoseconds here! Rolling Eyes

Last summer there was a spider on my window seal & so i got out the spider catcher & as i knocked the spider, i found out it was pregnant. Loads of little spiders fell off her back & started to scatter. Sick

We got it good compared to some countries. Laughing

Ill try and get a piccy of the thing above my front door. Those common house spiders look the part but i think this thing is the real deal.

What is that new type of breed here that isnt a black widow but has similar attributes? I think its one of them. Confused
